I went to the theater to see The Proposal starring Sandra Bullock for a date and I absolutely loved it. I was not really sure about the out come of the movie and did not know if the story line was going to be worth the eight fifty I did not pay. But I was proven wrong. Everything about this movie was absolutely perfect to me. I actually had to go to the bathroom about thirty minutes into the movie and held it till the end because I didn’t want to miss a minute. That is what I call a attention getter. A mix of drama, laughter, and love this story related so closely to my life I couldn’t help but love it.
The Plot
Sandra Bullock is an overbearing boss for a publishing company who has detached herself from the world around her. She cares only about herself and uses Ryan Reynolds, her trusty and loyal assistant Andrew, to help her. When she is told that because of a little mistake she made in the past she would be deported she orders Andrew to marry her so that she can stay in the country and keep her job. Andrew makes Margaret, Bullocks character, go to Alaska and meet his family. While she is there their fondness for each other grows through the trails and laughs they share. An Australian critic says, “Most of the humour derives from the bitter wordplay between Reynolds and Bullock, who bounce off each other splendidly,” and I would have to agree with him completely. These two were meant from each other because they complement each other so well. Why this movie just works Now I’ve never been threatened to be deported, or been engaged, but I have been known to shut myself off from the world and from relationships. All relationships I have haven’t lasted very long or they have never really gotten to the “girlfriend boyfriend title” stage. Mainly because I get scarred and find something in the other person or the relationships that is wrong. I’m a work-a-holic, like Sandra Bullock in this movie, and I tend to spend all my time focusing on what I need to do to better myself and not really acknowledge that I also need to find something that makes me happy to fully better myself. This movie, even though a movie, sends a message to everyone out there, not just girls, that in order to be the person that you really are you need to take the barb wire fence down from around your heart and just open up to everyone and anyone. Getting hurt is a part of life and how are you suppose to make mistakes and learn from them if you do not allow yourself to make mistakes.
Besides the story line, that was so easily related to, the acting was fantastic. I have always loved Sandra Bullock in everything she has done, but I think this movie is by far her best. She really allowed herself to be the stuck up business devil woman they wanted her to be. It was a step out of her comfort zone from her previous movies when she has been the nice girl or the one who always get stepped on. It really showed that she can play any character she is assigned.
Lastly, the balance of humor, drama, and romance was amazing. Usually a movie will lean one way or the other. If I were in a Blockbuster I would not know what section to look for The Proposal in. It was so diverse, which was so refreshing from the all action movies or all drama. The balance allowed you to relate to the characters on a personal level. Through my eighteen years I have never had the same day start and end twice and that is exactly how I felt with this movie. I could not predict it, which I love. I think everyone loves a movie that keeps them wondering all the way through.
A terrific date movie or a movie that you can watch with anyone really, The Proposal was totally worth the movie date suggestion. I know tons of people who feel the same as I do. I’m sure there are people who don’t feel the same as me, but honestly they don’t know what they are talking about. The Proposal is on my list of things to buy in the future.
