This was definitely one of Oprah's better picks. You just hurt because of the naivete of this poor soul. How could a girl know so little and how could her parents deny their child basic knowledge to survive in the world. I cried for this girl several times while reading the story.
I do not want to reveal too much about the plot but it does contain some very adult subject matters and they are not dealt with in a very positive way. The way this girl is treated, in my opinion, is abuse. I would love to know the author's basis for the story because I cannot imagine anyone dealing with the circumstances that this poor girl did.
The book is very well written and I would love to read other books written by the same author.
