porcelina22's Full Review: Anita Diamant - The Red Tent
Do you remember Dinah?
No, probably not. She was the only daughter in a family of 14. You probably remember her brother Joseph though...you know- the one with the really cool coat. And you probably know a little something about her father Jacob- Son of Isaac, brother of Esau, and husband to Rachel, Leah, Zilpah, and Billah.
But that isn't who this story is about. This is about Dinah. The cherished daughter among a wealth of sons. The only daughter to carry along her (4) mothers' secrets. There are but a few verses that mention her in the Bible- the tragedy in Hamor's palace and the ensuing chaos. We only get the male's side of the story in the Bible though. This book takes you to a new place- The Red Tent.
The Red Tent is the gathering place of the women. It is the sacred place, the place of the moon, the place of child bearing, the place of secrets. Dinah reflects back to this place during the course of the book as it is also the place of wisdom.
The plot of The Red Tent ensnares you. Even if you know only the slightest bit of Bible history, you will not be left in the dark. Not only does The Red Tent cover the areas already in the Bible, but it takes you outside of it- to the ordinary, everyday lives of Biblical times.
Dinah observes everything, constantly keeping you in tune to the scene. You are there as she loses her family, everything she has ever known, as a result of her brothers' greed, misunderstanding, and pride. She is ripped out of a life almost attaining perfection, and shoved into an alien country. Not knowing the customs, the language, or any friends Dinah must continue on.
Truly a must read for every woman. You will learn more about your own strength, your own heart, and your own soul by following Dinah through the discovery of hers. The Red Tent is inspiring, powerful and tragic. I guarantee that you will get teary-eyed at least once, and come away from the book a new person.
Her name is Dinah. In the Bible, her life is only hinted at in a brief and violent detour within the more familiar chapters of the Book of Genesis tha...More at HotBookSale
