Javelina's Full Review: The Republic Of Tea Mint Fields Organic Herb Tea, ...
I have tried many teas by the Republic of Tea, but mostly their green and red teas. I got Organic Mint Fields as a gift, and I was curious, but a little hesitant, to give this one a try, as some of the mint teas I have tried in the past are a bit overwhelming.
"Certified Organic Caffeine-Free Herbs. Refreshing spearmint and peppermint from the Pacific Northwest are combined with the bright, crisp flavor of lemon balm, long favored for lifting one's spirits and inspiring the mind. The soothing blend of organic spearmint, peppermint and lemon grass has been appreciated for its pleasing power to aid in digestion. This refreshing brew is nice after a meal for a calm stomach and sweet breath. " (RepublicOfTea.com)
The Tea
This tea came in a tin of 36 tea bags, although you can also buy a loose tea version. The tin costs about $11 and is very pretty, although you can order teabags in a bag (as a refill or bulk). When I buy this brand, I sometimes buy it in stores, like the health food store or Vitamin Shoppe, but it can be tough to find the exact flavor you are looking for (since they make so many flavors). Otherwise you can order right from their website (RepublicOfTea.com), which I have had a positive experience with.
The tea bags are round and don't have a string, tag, or staple. From an eco-friendly standpoint, this is a nice feature, and when I am done with the tea bag, I toss it right in the compost.
Ingredients
USDA certified organically grown spearmint, peppermint and lemongrass.
My Thoughts
The directions for this tea recommend steeping for 3-5 minutes, and since I don't like strong mint flavors, I follow the instructions for this tea. A lot of herbal teas I just leave the tea bag in the whole time, but I don't want to overbrew this tea, because I don't want the mint to get too sharp of a taste to it.
This tea brews a light yellow-green color. Right out of the container, the tea bags have a strong aroma, and are distinctly mint. When brewed, this tea has a strong and distinct aroma as well, but it is not overpowering (as in "burn your eyes" kind of overwhelming!).
The taste is basically what I expected - minty. I don't pick up the tones of lemongrass in this blend, and it seems like an average mint. I don't know that I sense both the peppermint and spearmint, but I do like this blend overall. I don't like overly strong mints as they can easily be overpowering and not enjoyable.
I would say this tea is mellow enough while still being flavorful. It doesn't have that unpleasant "bite" that a lot of teas can have when they have mint in them.
Overall I like this tea, but it is not my favorite. I am very happy that it is an organic tea with eco-friendly tea bags. It is one of the nicer mint teas that I have tried, since it doesn't have a sharp or overwhelming taste, but it is about average for me and nothing really stands despite having good qualities.
