sweet-indigo's Full Review: Isaac Asimov - The Robots of Dawn
Having just finished The Naked Sun, and having already read Robots and Empire (the fourth book in the series) I was anxious to find out the basis of the story and also hungry for more of Baley's adventures. All of the other robot novels had fascinated me to an amazing extent, and The Robots of Dawn simply surpassed all my expectations.
It follows Elijah Baley to Aurora, summoned by Dr. Hans Fastolfe to help solve the mystery of a robot's ceasing to function - you might even say, death. The ending is clever, poignant, and hopeful.
The cast of this novel is an astoundingly human group of individuals. No character fell flat with me - instead they were in beautiful technicolor. And with the vividness of character came the vividness of culture and setting. Baley's discomforts become our own as we navigate around this unpredictable world with its alien customs. The various traditions are portrayed brilliantly, serving to provoke interest and empathy with our detective. It is a fascinating, engrossing, and exciting novel. Need I say more?
