Thanks for reading and leaving a comment! You're right about the quality of "fractured fairy tale" efforts--they're either really well done or horrible flops. So far, Vande Velde has impressed me with her abilities in this area. I'm hoping to read more of her work soon--just as soon as I finish the big stack of books I'm currently working on.

Playing with fairy tales can lead to no end of fun, but such exercises seem to either fare very poorly or very well.

You're right that a domovoi isn't as servile as Rumpelstiltskin seems to be in the one story (judging from your review). A domovoi is something to be appeased more than it is a place to turn for help with specific problems. Keep the domovoi happy by having an orderly and happy household and all your dealings will be blessed. And vice versa.

Nice review.
