it would probably astound me to know how many generations and how many children have curled up and gone to sleep to this beautiful story of a mother's unconditional, constant love - to imagine that love wrapping its warmth around so many children, makes me almost cry.....
i only wish i could give this story to every child, everywhere.....
My children loved this book, each one had their own copy of it, and another wonderful one, called "Goodnight Moon" - if there are only two books in a child's library, that are read to them every night, these would be the ones...
The Runaway Bunny the little bunny tells his mother that he is going to run away - and she tells him that she will find him -
so he tells her that he will change into something - and she will change into something also, and find him and bring him home -
so he tells her that he will become a different something, and will move far away - and she will become the safe place he can land, and she will bring him home again -
and again - every possible thing that the little bunny comes up with - testing to see if there is any way that his mother will NOT save him - and finding out that no, there is nothing - she will always come and she will always bring him home...then even offering him a carrot just because she loves him...
such a delightful loving story of a mother's patience, and love - reinforced over and over again for a little one - and he needs to hear it over and over - making sure each time that it is still true - I think that is why it is a story that is read over and over to children all over the world -
I heard once that if a child is left to his own devices, he will crave foods that are actually good for him.....well, perhaps his heart does the same thing - with my children, I know that they wanted to hear this story every night - and that went on for years.....not that they questioned it or doubted it, they just wanted to hear it again and again.....
kind of like hearing the words "I love you" - even if we know they are true, we never tire of hearing them...
as I said at the beginning, if there are only two books in your child's library, please make sure that this is one of them. reading it may make you smile, it may make you cry.....but it will probably surely make you hold the little one snuggled close...
and then ........goodnight moon.....
