| CDFrye120's Full Review: The Running Man Books |
I am truly an avid Stephen King fan, have prided myself on reading everything the man has written. I recently discovered that I had skipped this one, this Bachman book - The Running Man.
The Bachman books are, if you haven't read any, a glimpse of a more harsh, "out there" King. In the more recently written forward section of the book he indicates that he was sad, yet somewhat relieved by the demise (or outing) of Richard Bachman. He misses being able to write without the pressure of being "Stephen King" and all of the things that go with that.
Without giving anything up, here's the idea:
In the year 2025 the world is riddled with pollution and poverty. Ben Richards is a poor man whose baby daughter is sick - he and his wife have no means to provide medical care for her so he decides to become a contestant on A Free-V show. He ends up after some testing on a show called the Running Man.
This book outlines his experience avoiding the Hunters, earning money for his family with every hour that he remains free. It paints a vivid, frightening picture of how things would be if the "Network" were to rule our lives.
There are some graphic scenes, particularly toward the end of the novel. A reminder that the Bachman books give us a more... colorful.... glimpse of Stephen King's personality.
Where would you hide????
