SHARPER IMAGE ELLIPTICAL STRIDER - Fold Away or Throw Away?

The Bottom Line: This is a waste of your money!
I was at Goodwill Saturday getting some books, they have a surprisingly good selection and prices range from $.99 - $1.99! So anyway, I was headed up to the register and I saw this thing sitting near the "sporting goods" section. It was in decent condition and even better...it was priced at a mere $14.99! No joke! I talked them down to $10 because the waist pad thing was scuffed up and had a small tear and it looked like a dog liked to chew on one of the foot pads (not too bad though). I couldn't pass it up for $10...

I realize I bought the Sharper Image Elliptical Strider at Goodwill, but this has to be the crapiest machine I've ever used! I think I'll stick to the Precor machines at my club! It doesn't feel like it allows for a full range of motion. It feels too constricted. It does help work your lower body and cardiovascular system, but new or used - look for a different machine.
The LCD screen displays: elapsed time, total steps, steps per minute and calories burned. The screen is really small and far away from eye level so I often don't read it till I'm through working out. I'm not sure how accurate it is. I tried counting my strides once and the computer was about 20 strides behind my count. It keeps time well though. I can't imagine the calorie counter is accurate because you don't enter weight, height, or gender.
So far, my longest workout has been 45 minutes. It's held up under my 230 lbs well...it's only supposed to hold 200 lbs. Probably the best thing about the Elliptical Strider is that you can fold it up and store it under a bed or in a closet. The footpads accomodate my size 12 feet so they should work for most people. Grasp the moving handlebars, which supposedly work your arms, lean your stomach on the padded cushion and stride your way to a leaner body...
I have a better idea. Fold the Elliptical Strider up and carry it around. Walk like 2-5 miles with it and you'll get a decent workout.
The construction of the Elliptical Strider is cheap, hence the low retail price, so prepare for squeaky parts and a little bit of wobble. It's worse when you try increasing your pace, but that may be because I weigh more than the recommended weight limit. Also, at faster speeds it wobbles some side to side. It's not very stable. The biggest problem I have with the Elliptical Strider is the moving handlebars. I'd rather have stationary handlebars, but then it wouldn't be a fold away system. Besides the moving handlebars don't really work your arms because your arms aren't exerting any force to move they're just going through the motions. Probably the best thing about the Elliptical Strider is the cost. But considering what you get, that's not much of a plus.
Even though new it's less than $200 and I bought it for $10, I still don't recommend this machine. It's a cheap piece of crap, for the same price you'd do better buying running gear. It was a decent find for only $10. It was worth trying, I wish it would have been better. I'll probably sell it. Scope out some other brands, I know there are several options for less than $500. Elliptical trainers, good ones, are one of my favorite cardio machines to use. They are gentle on joints, easy to use, and allow you to go forward and backward. I like the ones that allow you to increase intensity and/or elevation. But that does not describe the Sharper Image Elliptical Strider! Pass this bad boy and find something more worthy of your money.
