Opinion Summary
KRS-One Devastates Mainstream Hip-Hop with The Sneak Attack!

Pros: Intelligent, socially conscious lyrics.
Cons: No guest appearances. Beats are good, but nothing commercial radio will embrace.

Finally some real rap (Reply to this comment)

I am about to drop a review really soon for this album. I got my hands on it the day it came out. You were right in line with my thinking as far as the rating goes, it was a four star effort right out of the gate. KRS has done better, however this is so much better than most of the brag rap that is out now.

Based on what is out there it almost gets a five in my book. I was a little let down by the beats and samples but his strong writing and messages held the album high.

Would you happen to know where I can "legally" download a copy of a song off this album? By that I mean x-out the napster programs. Like an official website? I've admittedly only got to hear Krs-One in a commercial, I think it was for sprite, a few years back. Other than that, I've hardly ever seen his albums in a store, and never seen his music videos played(if he has any?). Of course, in this day and age, Jay-Z would be chosen way over anyone, to be played. Which makes me kind of sick, as it makes those who are unwilling to buy cds, only to find it a waste as soon as we listen to it. And since I don't know anyone with his albums, I don't know if he has a website, and if he does, I don't know the address. So I can't go legally download many of his songs, if he makes any available on the net.

I'm not much into hip hop except for older Run DMC, Pharcyde and I couldn't help but like Dre & Snoop when they first hit on the West Coast. But I've always thought KRS-One was one of the most intelligent rappers out there. It's good to hear he's out with a new album and still tackling real issues.

KRS-One does have an official website, but it hasn't been updated since his last LP. If you want to hear some of his new music, go to CDNow.com or Launch.com. You can't download a full copy, but you can hear the music. -mad

The production, IMHO, was at times fantastic. "Why", "Mind", "Attendance"...aw yeah!

And at other times, it point-blank sucked. Kenny Parker seems to have suffered from a tragic case of "me too" syndrome, and therefore tried to copy that annoying slow pace that a lot of Dirty South rap revolves around. I dunno, for me, slow beats only work with either classical, ambient, or heavy metal music...anything else and I just start nodding off from boredom.

And "Hot"...that entire beat needs revamping. It's a classic case of someone misusing string instruments badly, as the melody almost gets drowned out by the hi-hats, and it's a boring melody anyway. Indeed, a TON of hiphop music today is guilty of that...people will string together violin loops, not paying any attention to things like dynamics, changing tempos...it sounds totally lifeless. I don't know why I get so bugged out over this when it comes to violins, but not other instruments...

Bottom line, it's definitely NOT the same sound that powered the near-flawless production efforts that started with "Sex & Violence" and ended with the self-titled LP. Yet that's my sole complaint here, because otherwise this is a fantastic album. I don't think he's EVER been fiercer on the mic - for me, it's a testament to his brilliant microphone skills that I can hate the production of some songs, yet still be unable to skip them when they start playing.

Hell, reading Rolling Stone's lukewarm review of "Sneak Attack" (THREE stars?! WHAT?!) has prompted me to write a pretty long rant dissing them - man, they have perhaps the stupidest hiphop reviews I've ever read - expect that one up in a week or so.

Anyway, great job as always! - Craig
