momofmichael's Full Review: Ezra Jack Keats - The Snowy Day
I remember this book fondly from my childhood. I remember seeing it read on TV - perhaps Sesame Street. I was very excited to check this book out from the library and read it to my three year old. It was even more meaningful since we'd recently had a fluky mid-December snow in South Texas. Although ours was not even an inch and didn't last past noon, it was enough for my child to relate.
In this story, Pete wakes up to find snow. He enjoys walking in it and making different tracks. He enjoys making the snow fall out of trees and watching the big kids have a snow ball fight. He makes a snow man and snow angels. He climbs and slids and enjoys the snow, finally packing a snow ball into his pocket to save for tomorrow before he goes inside. His mom helps him get warm and then he checks on his snowball and finds it is gone. (Melting is never explained but the wet pocket is evidence.) He dreams that the sun melted all the snow and is delighted to wake up and see that his dream did not come true. He graba a friend and they go out to play again.
The illsutrations are not extremely detailed but clear enough to be understood and not too abstract as to be scary.
