| thestory's Full Review: The Stoning of Soraya M. |
On Wednesdayl June 17, 2009 The U. S. Helsinki Commission presented a preview screening of documentary type film, "The Stoning of Soraya M" at the Capitol Visitor Center. Before the film was presented FilmDirector, Cyrus Mowrasteh spoke briefly about the film, mentioning some of the hazards and difficulties that were encountered and hinted at some problems that may arise. You may recall the murder of the filmmaker Theo Van Gogh, and as was written by Mr. Lorenzo Vidino in his book "Al Qaeda in Europe," "The jihad battlefront is everywhere nowadays...."
Mr. Mowrash reminded everybody (whether present or not) that this method of punishment is not permisable according to the Holy Koran, and that people have used and will in the future excuse their actions by leaning on scriptures. In the film a corrupt mullah was manipulated by a philandering husband that wanted to get rid of his wife so that he could marry a younger woman.
The story of the film is based on a book written by Mr. Freidoune Sahebjam in 1994 who I assume was the film's journalist that managed to smuggle out an audio casette with the story that was related by Saroya's aunt. As the film's director cautioned the audience, the MPAA rated the film "R" because there is much content that is graphic and difficult to watch but was so presented in memory of the women, and in some cases men, that were executed in this manner. He hoped that the film will stop this practice, which still continues in several of the countries in the Middle East.
Wife abuse is also presented to illustrate the patriarchal arrangement legalized by marriage. The husband even told his son that the man is the boss in the household, but, at the same time, the film illustrated how dependent men were on women to the point that men could not even cook simple meals without women, wives or housekeepers.
The viewer may be interested in seeing what a small Iranian village looks like, and what life is like there. I asked a young lady that was sitting next to me if she would consider moving to Iran, and she said, "No thank you." However, there is much to say for that styhle of life, and there is no place like home for people that know no other way to live. Stoning, to me is horrible.
