| daperlman's Full Review: The Sundy House Inn |
This is a review of my 4/2/2009 stay at the Sundy House, I stayed in a one bedroom townhouse (room 2 - I think).
Introduction When I told my peeps I was staying at the Sundy House, they couldn't believe it. Heck I couldn't believe it. I hate B&B's. I don't want to have to sneak in - drunk at five in the morning - and step on someone's cat. It all started when I found out that I would have ocassion to be in Delray and began goggle-ing. I found a Kessler hotel (Sundy House) literally six blocks from a friend's house. I had stayed at some other Kessler hotels and enjoyed them. My main complaint about B&B's is the lack of privacy, amenities and rundown facilities. I called and gave Tiffany my hotel questions and took the plunge. At a little over 200, a suite in that area, was very reasonable.
One word that anyone could use to describe Sundy House is 'different'. Some may like it, and some may hate it, but I can't think of any other place quite like Sundy House. Picture a small jungle 1 block from the center of Delray (Atlantic Avenue). It is so strange and in my opinion a welcome departure from the humdrum of large hotels. Sundy House has only 11 rooms in 3 small residential buildings. Each one completely unique from one another and each unlike any hotel room I have ever seen. As you walk toward the rooms, you will walk thru or around an open air bar/ restaurant into the self contained jungle, completely with several exotic plants, trees and birds. The small facility is transected by a babbling stream, pond and a very interesting fresh water pool complete with fishies. Outside you'll hear the crackling of bamboo and cackling of birds. The jungle and outdoor seating for the restaurant is practically right outside your balcony/deck. The very small staff is friendly when they are around, and everyone does everything (no division of labor here :)). They are few but quickly become friends. There was a late night stooper when I couldn't reach anyone for a wake up call. I have read complaints that events (such as weddings and bridal showers) tend to 'take over' Sundy House, but I did not observe this.
I had ocassion to eat at the fancy restaurant, and while I was prepared for disappointment, it was very good. This menu features fresh (many grown on location), inspired ingredients and creative dishes. Beware of the deadly five dollar martini happy hour... I was a little over indulgent there and awoke with the cocktail flu.
The Rooms Surprisingly the rooms here provide more privacy and amenities than a 5 star hotel. My townhouse was a little apartment with a clown throw up decor (I say that affectionately). My room was like a very nice walk up apartment. It had a TV, free wireless, full kitchen including dishwasher fridge and ice maker, bose wave radio and even a washer and dryer. Howard Hughes would have saved bundles wasting away at Sundy House. The room was nice and clean but lacked a TV in the bedroom (which is a tough one for me). If you are hungry for power outlets - this is the place for you! The cable line-up is surprisingly robust. I could have barricaded myself in this room and survived for weeks, although I would have had to barter an additional bar of soap for the sink. The room also includes a large deck area overlooking the grounds. When I left to check in to my next destination (a fancy beach front resort) I found myself kind of missing the good ole Sundy House
