| Ahab1973's Full Review: The Tea Spot Vintage Oolong Tea - 3.25 Ounces Loos... |
Introduction - I bought my first tin of this at my local Vitamin Shoppe. At a little over $10, I initially thought the price was a little steep but I wanted to try an oolong (This was and is my first).
The product - This tea comes in a kind of square, rather plain looking tin. Upon opening it, I was not very impressed with the aroma. I couldn't get it out of me head that it was reminiscent of melted plastic (Don't even ask how I know what melted plastic smells like). Not exactly an encouraging sign. The tea itself is rolled up into little balls about the size of peas.
Brewing - The tin calls for two teaspoons to eight ounces of hot water. I was skeptical that this would be enough but I followed the directions. I normally start out with about three and a half minutes for the first infusion and increase it by about 15 seconds for additional infusions.
The taste - Surprisingly, once I started drinking it, my first impression that it smelled like melted plastic imediately went away and it was now much more reminiscent of peaches. An odd flavor (I thought) for plain tea. I read the tin carefully, thinking there must be something else in it. If there's anything else in this tea or if it's infused with anything else, it doesn't say so. So I'm sticking with it. It's plain tea that tastes (for lack of a better word) peachy. And surprisingly, I love it! I'm not too keen on fruity notes in my tea but this is really smooth and delicate. Just perfect.
A few notes - One of the great things about this tea is multiple infusions. I'd heard multiple infusions were a feature of other loose leaf teas but frankly, I was never really that impressed with anything other than the first infusion. This tea just gets better with each infusion until you get up to around five infusions. I've actually gone as far as 7 delicious infusions. This makes for a nice, long, relaxing session as well as being very easy on your budget.
These leaves really expand as they unfurl (I expect they would put on a spectacular show if you infused them in a clear pot with plenty of room)! What seems like two tiny heaps of balled up leaves at first expands into a substantial mass of large leaves that (by the time I get my last infusion) nearly fills the entire basket!
This tea (Like most tea) does have some caffeine. Being a confessed caffeine junky for many years, I can't say whether it would really bother those sensitive to caffeine or not. I've generally found the caffeine content in tea is just not comparable to that in soda or coffee. Coffee makes me nervous and jittery but tea relaxes me.
Conclusion - I remember not expecting much at all when I bought the first tin. I'm about 3/4 of the way through my second tin now and it's easily my favorite tea (so far). I fully intend to buy much more of this. I highly recommend it.
