dvlish's Full Review: Sophie Kinsella - The Undomestic Goddess
Spoiler alert: this review gives away major details about the storyline!!!
This is the second book I have read by Sophie Kinsella and I have to say I loved it. Completely different than her shopping obsessed characters, this book features an up and coming lawyer at the most prestigious law firm in London just as she is about to make partner. Samantha Sweeting is the brightest legal mind the firm has ever seen. She works 15 hour days, 7 days a week and has no time for family, personal life, etc. Things begin innocently enough as she is getting ready to meet her mom and brother for dinner to celebrate her 29th birthday.
Surprisingly a meeting gets cut short and she is actually going to arrive at the restaurant early. She arrives and is seated and is feeling pretty good about the evening. The waiter comes by and she places a drink order for 3 asking him to serve when the others arrive. As she begins looking over the menu one of the wait staff brings her a phone and its her mother cancelling on her at the last minute. As she is talking to her mom a young lady comes to the table with a gift basket and a cell phone. Her brother's assistant is sending his regrets. She is on 2 phones listening to her family cancel on her birthday dinner when the waiters come over and sing happy birthday to her embarrassment she is sitting there alone and all eyes are on her.
She quietly makes her escape only to bump into a dear friend outside who was just popping in to say hi on her way to the airport. A quick exchange of well wishes and she heads back to the office for a late night of finance law and contracts.
Ah the glamorous life of a high powered attorney. She wakes the next day on pins and needles and arrives at the office for the day of partner selection. She will be the youngest ever partner at Carter and Spink. Her friend Guy stops in to tell her that she was selected and it will be announced in an hour. She is so excited she can't focus on her work so she instead begins tidying her messy office only to discover a document she forgot to file, or so she thinks. It's a week past the deadline and one of the firm's clients now has an unsecured loan for 50 million Euros...ok, try not to panic...call the bank have the papers re-drawn, no big deal. Wrong! She finds that the mistake can't be undone and the client has lost their money.
Enter PANIC...she can't breathe and doesn't know how this could have happened, she has to get some air...somehow she ends up at the train station and gets on a train to anywhere. Ignoring her cell phone she is in total shock that she may have just made a career ending mistake. All she has worked so hard for, gone.
The story continues with Samantha ending up at the front door of a home in a tiny little town far from London. She knocks and is mistaken for a housekeeper sent over by the service. One thing leads to another and she takes the job and her adventure really begins.
I will leave you with that but will say that the witty humor, wonderful characters and even Samantha's well developed curtsy make this a great read. The English dialogue is fun and adds wit to the characters. You will enjoy this adventure as Samantha goes from high powered attorney to undomestic goddess and even finds herself and love along the way.
