| sweetycaroline's Full Review: The Velveteen Rabbit by Margery Williams Bianco, I... |
This book is a timeless classic that not only appealed to my generation , but will touch the hearts for many more to come . The Velveteen Rabbit has a quality and air about it that makes you feel like a child again . It might also quite possibly teach destructive children how to appreciate their toys .
There are 39 elegant pages in this book . The paper used is thick and easy for small hands to turn . The lettering is large making reading less trying for small children learning how to read . The illustrations are wonderful and look to be done in a watercolor type of paint .
The story starts out that this little boy gets a velveteen rabbit at Christmas time . The boy scarcely noticed the rabbit and hence he got thrown in a toy cupboard. For many nights the bunny stayed there meeting new toys and even finding out what it means to become real . To become real a toy must not only be played with , but truly loved .
One day the boy could not find his toy dog and substituted the bunny . The rabbit became his favorite toy and he kept it with him from there on out . Eventually the little boy fell ill.The rabbit stayed with the boy through his illness as only a true friend ever could .Now , when the boy got better the doctor ordered that all his toys be burnt to keep scarlet fever from spreading . This included the now shabby velveteen rabbit whom was worn from lots of love.
The rabbit was outside waiting to be burnt when a large real tear slid down his furry cheek . The nursery magic fairy took notice of him and took him away to be made into a real bunny! The bunny was happy and went back to check on his boy , so that even the child thought he looked like the old toy he lost when he took sick .
This is a beautiful tale that I feel even if I put all of my writing talents into , I could never do it justice . Even as an adult it makes me want to run to my children's room and dig out my old toys to love them just one more time , before I am too old to remember what they meant to me.
There is little more I can say on this book other than you surely will not be disappointed with it should you buy it . Thanks for reading - sweetycaroline
