Once upon a time, there was a teacher who taught her class about bugs. She was looking for books to read to her class, when she remembered The Very Hungry Caterpillar. She read this fun book to her students and they loved the bright, vibrant illustrations and the predictability of the story. Most of all the loved creating their own 'Very Hungry' stories.
Many teachers in my school use this book in the Spring to teach the lifecycle of butterflies. My students enjoyed hearing a story that they have known from earlier grades.
At the beginning of the book, the caterpillar is just an egg on a leaf. Once it hatches, it goes on an eating spree. On Monday it eats one apple. On Tuesday it eats two pears. As the week goes on, it gets fatter and fatter by eating more and more. By the end of the week, it spins its cocoon, and becomes a beautiful butterfly.
This book is great for teaching the days of the week, counting and the lifecycle of butterflies. It is an excellent teaching tool for teachers and parents of kids of all ages.
