I didn't know that, but I can see it now that I do. I bet it ties in even more to the beginning of The Silver Chair.

Perhaps they are too oblique to be spotted now, but this book perhaps more than the others contains several barbed references to the British social and political scene of the time. Eustace's school is almost certainly based on Beedales, where wealthy leftists sent their children for what they perceived to be a progressive education with no religious instruction. Lewis's contempt is palpable.
