JayAckroyd's Full Review: Kai Meyer - The Water Mirror
Set in a mythical Venice under attack from Egypt, The Water Mirror is a fascinating, fun trip to an alternative universe.
Merle, the heroine, is an orphan apprenticed to a mysterious mirror maker who is rumored to dabble in magic. Along with her blind friend, Junipa, Merle begins to discover some of the secrets of her world. It's a world of mermaids with shark's teeth in their wide mouths swim through the canals, while palace guards patrol on living stone lions. It's a place where mirrors don't merely reflect light, but offer a glimpse into other places and other beings.
Merle meets another apprentice--a boy named Serafin, a retired master thief learning how to weave magic cloth. Together they discover some of the secrets of the Flowing Queen, long-time patron of the City. They also discover that she is in terrible danger, and learn more than they want to about a plot to take Venice from under her protection.
Dodging perils, fighting when they must, Serafin and Merle find themselves in a whirlwind of magic and mystery, where their mettle and their loyalty to each other, their City and the Queen is put to the test.
Kai Meyer's beautiful, mysterious and imaginative world provides a marvelous setting for the adventures of these two richly drawn (and very funny) characters. Your kids will be captivated--and you'll want to read it, too.
