| akshobhyavajra's Full Review: The Way to Freedom Books |
Tenzin Gyatso provides a clear and compassionate introduction to the Mahayana school of Buddhism. The book is practical, yet contains sufficient information about the basic teachings of the Buddha.
In this book one can find a way to freedom from thoughts and the mind. In life all of us are, to use a term from cognitive psychology, "conditioned" to think and hence to behave in certain ways. No matter how we think we are "free" to do or think about certain things, we have already been conditioned through social learnings or our other experience. Buddhist thought teaches to unlearn conditioned ways and approach the world from a different perspective.
After reading this book, one may well begin to understand that things are not necessarily what they appear or perceived. All are in the working of the consciousness and the mind.
A valuable introduction by H.H. - written in his usual kind and compassionate style, which is so reflective of the manifestation of the Bodhisattva Chenrezig. The book is intended for general audiences. No formal knowledge of Buddhist philosophy is necessary. A useful guide and fine addition to most any library.
Another recommendation is Jiddu Krishnamurti's book Freedom from The Known (also reviewed by the writer).
