The Good and the Bad
Written: May 04 '06
Pros:Location, Ambiance, Cleanliness
Cons:Parking rates are robbery, vending machines take your money and the staff doesn't really care.
The Bottom Line: If you are not planning to park here, it is a fairly good rate on a room for this part of the city. Also, don't use the vending machines.
GOOD:
I booked a room last-minute from hotwire at $130/night at this hotel. I live in Chicago, but had a friend from out of town coming. First of all, the location is very good in the city...right in the heart of everything. The hotel lobby is gorgeous and has a very nice aroma to it, almost like that of a light perfume. The rooms are nice, clean and comfy with the patented "Heaven" beds Westin is now touting.
BAD:
I tried to park my car in the parking garage overnight and was sickened to learn that it would cost me a whopping $41 (YES, I SAID FORTY ONE DOLLARS) to leave it for more than 12 hours. I have lived in Chicago for 6 years and I work downtown. I sometimes park my car in other lots near this hotel. I can tell you that $41 a night is absolute ROBBERY and is likely something they are doing to take advantage of tourists who don't know any better.
Around 11PM, I was thirsty and walked down to the soda vending machine next to the elevators on my floor. I put in $2 for a 20-oz soda...only to have it take my money. The change return button was worthless. So I went to the floor beneath mine. I put in $2 more and pushed every single button and all the drinks were sold-out except for my least favorite one. It would not give me my money back, and would only let me buy the orange drink. So I went back to my room with the Fanta and called the front desk to complain. They apologized and offered to have room service send-up a bottle of Diet Coke (what I wanted). So 40 minutes later, and still no room service (and by now it is pushing past midnight). I called the front desk and told them I thought they were showing me very poor service and to cancel the order because I was going to bed. I received an insincere apology and was told "Ok, I'll just tell them to cancel the order then. Good night, Sir!" I was floored!!! Not only did I get ripped off by two vending machines, but I didn't get my soda, a refund, or any sympathy whatsoever from the hotel.
