| robinmichele's Full Review: The Whispering Rabbit Books |
The Whispering Rabbit is a Little Golden Book written by Margaret Wise Brown and illustrated by Cyndy Szekeres. What? You don't have a copy already? Hop on over to the bookstore... Or maybe if you are lucky, the Easter Bunny will bring you one.
You don't have kids, you say? Well, my friend... Neither do I. At least not directly. However this book serves up such an incredible dose of sweetness, no mere mortal can resist its charm. If you do have little ones stomping about your home, you have just found the most wonderful bedtime story.
The Plot thickens
Our main character is a sleepy little rabbit with a little pink mouth. As he stretches and yawns, a sleepy bee flies into his mouth! His friend the owl scolds him for yawning and not covering his mouth. Such manners! As the owl flies away, little rabbit tries to call out to him, but finds that he can only whisper because the bee is curled up asleep in his throat.
As dismal as this may seem, it is really presented in a very sweet manner. I would create much more of a fuss if a bee flew into my throat, that's for sure!
So how can we wake up the bee? (Do we really want to wake up the bee?) Rabbit enlists the help of squirrel and groundhog. Groundhog, in his wisdom, tells rabbit that he must make the smallest noise he can, for the tiny bee doesn't bother about large noises.
So rabbit thinks of all the small noises he can make. Snow falling. Bugs breathing. etc.
Still sleepy bee does not stir.
Then rabbit thinks of another sound! The sound of a bee clicking on an apple blossom.
Now we are talking! The little bee wakes and flies out of rabbit's throat.
So the sleepy little rabbit curls up and falls asleep.
Predictable, but effective!
Nitty Gritty
As one can expect from the author of Goodnight Moon, this is a fabulous bedtime story. The text is melodic and rich, full of vivid detail.
The illustrations are incredibly cute and full of glorious woodland detail. There are cute bunnies and there are cute bunnies. Let me tell you, that this is the Cutest Bunny. It would seem to my untrained eye that the art is done in colored pencil. Very soft and soothing colors.
So if this book does not already grace your shelves, run out and drop a dollar on it. It is well worth it. (Golden Books are so cool!)
