Pros: Music, catchy songs, dancing, colors, positive messages, and Anthony! Pure fun for all ages!
There is a new Wiggles show in town!
I have a 3 year old daughter who has been hooked on Wiggles since she was able to stand and bounce to the songs. I have a 17 month old who has been hooked since about the same time. They love every version of the Wiggles shows. I enjoy the Wiggles too but I have heard other opinions (negative opinions) from adults who obviously have never witnessed the ultimate joy on a toddler's face when The Wiggles are spotted. In other words, these adults "just don't get it".
Anyway, this August a new version, more mature (if you can say a Wiggles show is mature!)version aired on Playhouse Disney. It is called The Wiggles Show and seems to be more of a variety show, more in line with what you see in the concert video clips. The Wiggles are joined by the wiggly dancers, friendly pirates and The Little Wiggles. In the original version of The Wiggles on Playhouse Disney, "The Wiggles World", the songs were mostly accompanied by children dancing in costume. I kind of prefer the children dancing more than the wiggly dancers who are adult professional dancers in costume, but all are still good and the songs are still the catchy, fun, get stuck in your head songs.
The Little Wiggles are supposed to be The Wiggles when they were children. They pretend to sing, play instruments and dance. Dorothy the Dinosaur, Wags the dog, and Captain Feathersword are still on this show but I don't remember seeing Henry the Octopus.
I wasn't sure how this new format was going to be received by my girls, especially The Little Wiggles. Maybe because I just love to look at Anthony and didn't want my viewing interrupted by "Little Wiggles". ha!ha! My 3 year old LOVES them. In fact, she said she likes the Little Wiggles better than the grown up Wiggles. This show kept the best of the other two shows, i.e. Music with Murray (teaches about music); Anthony's workshop (crafts and activities for parent & child); and the dancing, singing, video clips from concerts and put them together with some new activities. The Wiggles themselves don't act as silly as they do in the old Wiggles show, "The Wiggles World", but there is more singing and dancing than in the newer show, "Lights! Camara! Action! Wiggles!".
I think that The Wiggles have mass appeal. I find them easy to watch or listen to while I'm getting housework done and the girls are watching them. I don't have to worry about questionable content and I love the fact that the girls are being exposed to music/dancing and that they are up participating in the dancing rather than being zombied out just watching tv. I enjoy the songs and find that I can't be in a bad mood when singing them. How can you not grin and feel funny singing "Hot Potato"? We have several cds that we listen to in the car as well. It's wonderful that, when the girls start getting fussy from a day of errands, we can pop a Wiggles cd in, start singing, and they get more interested in "Fruit Salad" than in whining.
We are even going to go to our first Wiggles concert this fall and I think I am as excited about it as my girls are. Even my husband, whom I didn't think particularly cared for The Wiggles, is wanting to go to the concert with us. So, for us, THE WIGGLES ARE GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!
