Mommy3S's Full Review: L. Frank Baum, Martin (RTL) Powell, Eloise McGraw,...
I remember eagerly awaiting the airing of the Wizard of Oz each year. I didn't care to read much as a child, so I had to wait and wait. Excitedly, my sisters and I would pile up on the couch with our popcorn to watch our movie. As an adult I began to enjoy reading and was excited to see my son become an avid reader at a very young age.
One of the first chapter books he read was "The Wizard of Oz." He loved it! Naturally, I bought him the Easy-To-Read version as he was only 7, but the story line is the same plus,as an added bonus, there are pictures to attract attention. My son sat down to read it and didn't put it down until he finished it.
Later I bought him the full length novel for schooling. WOW! This book was really worth our time. We both thoroughly enjoyed it. In the novel, explanations are given as to how each character came about. Each character has it's own story and many details were never shown in the movie.
Aunt Em-- Scared by young Dorothy's laughter so much so that she would place her hand on her heart and scream.
Uncle Henry-- A hard working, solemn man that rarely spoke and never smiled.
Toto-- Toto was the one thing that saved Dorothy from turning grey.
The Red Shoes-- In the book are actually Silver.
The Wicked Witch of the East-- Held the munchkins in bondage as slaves for many years.
The Scarecrow-- Actually made 2 days before meeting Dorothy and afraid of only one thing, the lighted match.
The Tin Man-- Love is the reason behind him being made of tin. He was once a woodsman in love with a Munchkin girl.
The Lion-- Truly a coward and definitely scared of his own shadow.
Queen of the Field Mice-- She and her mice saved Dorothy from the field of poppies.
The Emerald City-- So bright and glorious, spectacles (glasses) had to be worn to prevent blindness.
The Great OZ-- Demanded payment in order to grant the wishes of Dorothy, Scarecrow, the Tin Man & the Lion. His payment would be made by Dorothy killing the Wicked Witch of the West.
And that is just in the first half of the book. I will not ruin the surprises for you by giving you more insight into the book. You must read it for yourself. The second half of The Wizard of Oz is even more awesome and exciting than the first half. It will keep you glued to the book, just as it did my son and I.
L. Frank Baum, who started out as a Newspaper reporter and a traveling salesman, wrote a wonderful story of friendship for children. "The Wizard of Oz" is a story that has survived the generations. It captures the imagination and controls your emotions throughout the story. This book will continue to amaze generations to come and I truly hope that my grandchildren will find it as captivating as my son did.
I look forward to finding more from him at the library and hope that my son will enjoy them as much. I highly recommend reading this story to your child or giving it to him/her when he/she is ready to read chapter books.
