A Wonder by zoned233 | Nov 15 '01 Pros: Spurred NEWSWEEK's Jeff Giles to write a great article on Mr. Braithwaite. Cons: The writing style, the characters, the setting, the plot...none of it works.

I hated to do it.
I mean, to place Plan Nine down there in the cellar with this horrible "novel"...well, my apologies to the estate of Ed Wood. Really. The Wonderland Murders is oh-so-much-worse.
I'm sorry.
It won't happen again.

I've added a bit to my review of Mr. Braithwaite's breathtaking novel. Now I'm hip deep a an ACTUAL novel (Dan Simmons's THE CROOK FACTORY), which so far really is breathtaking.
I suspect it'll be a bit more difficult to compose a review for an excellent piece of work (I've yet to be disappointed by a Simmons novel), and still keep an "edge" to it. Know what I mean?

You seem less enthralled with Mr. Braithewaite's novel than Mr. Braithwaite himself does, and, as anyone on Amazon knows, he is a professional mystery writer (I just love the way he works that into every review and comment!)
Enjoyable review.

... Hi, I'm Shannon and I am another member of the "Peter was right" group. Hi Shannon!
Ahem, anyway, this was a pleasure to read, hope you do some more. Dood, what's with all this Plan Nine ... bashing? You all should be ashamed of yourselves, without Plan Nine ... there would be, uhm well, there would be, err, nothing to gage a really awful (but hillariously fun ride) of a movie by. Yeah, yeah, that's it!
Before I get too carried away, welcome aboard, I look forward to more. :)

Such a reception I'm getting! Thank you very much! Don't know how often I'll be able to post reviews -- my free time could be collected in a thimble, I think, and what little I get I spend reading, writing, and caring for my daughters.
But hey, with responses like this, how can I resist?
Thanks again.

Thank you for your encouraging words, and thank you for your cluing me in on the Update feature. I think the review does need a bit of revising, and I plan to put some time toward that...just as soon as I get a little time.
Thanks again!

Wow- fantastic first review! I guess that by now, you've realized that we are a greedy bunch and want your reviews to go on for a bit longer, so I won't bother to natter on about it. What I will say, though, is that I can hardly wait for the next one.
Welcome to Epinions.

and normally the missing detail would warrant an H rating rather than the Very Helpful that I settled on -- your infectiously enthusiastic skewering was just too persuasive to downgrade.
I look forward with eager anticipation to many more reviews from you -- do spend just a bit of time first reading some of the top book reviewers here to get a feel for the standards of the site. As well as Peter ("eplovejoy"), I'd recommend (among many others) "grouch".
Oh, and you should know that if you ever feel like revising your review, there's an "Update" feature that lets you do that -- it's off to the right on your review page. Just fyi.
Welcome to the site -- hope to see a lot more of you!

Thank you for the welcome.
Was my brazen glee that obvious? I suppose it was. Thank you for the suggestions. I see I should have elaborated more on the author's writing by providing excerpts...guess I thought that the Plan Nine reference reflected it (at least at the time), because Mr. Braithwaite's writing has the same clunky feel to it that Ed Wood's "finest" had.

Thanks.
I hadn't got so far as page 2 of THE WONDERLAND MURDERS when Ed Wood's classic popped into my head. While the subject matter is vastly different, it has that same clunky style.

Terrific beginning (Reply to this comment)
by eplovejoy
Dear zoned233,
Welcome to Epinions. I hope you enjoy your time on the site enough to stick around.
I appreciate the brazen glee you bring to pointing out Braithwaite's ineptitude. But if I may be so bold as to suggest something: Your review, and any others you write, would be better if you were to include more. A brief description of the story and perhaps a short sample of Braithwaite's prose would help, as would some description of your experience reading the thing.
But what you've provided is terrific, and I'm grateful for it.
Best wishes,
Peter
