Not Just For Writers

Written: Feb 26 '00 (Updated Mar 03 '00)
Pros:gives the blueprint for writing exciting stories
Cons:should be called THE HUMAN JOURNEY

You don't have to be a writer to get a lot of good out of this book. If you simply want to be a hero or mentor, rounding out your character to fully enjoy life, then this book will tell you how to do that. As the author says at the end, we are on a hero's journey as well as a writer's journey.

A hero starts with a life in the ordinary world, just going along like normal, when he is called to adventure by a 'mentor', someone he look up to or has his respect, usually someone older like parents, teachers or Boss. In books it can be wizards, shamans or a talking animal! The hero can refuse the call, but eventually will be led to realize he must take it or accept an alternative call.

There can be Threshold Guardians who try to keep the hero from progressing on her journey. Think of the flying monkeys in THE WIZARD OF OZ circling around for the kill. Heroes don't want these guys, but they will always be there.

Other characters who represent archetypes or symbolize certain mythological traits are the Shapeshifter, the Shadow, the Villain and the Ally. Heroes can be Allies to other characters, have a Shadow side, and change shape to make other characters and you the reader wonder if they're really heroes. That makes the story more realistic and that's also real life.

This book outlines how to write a real story that will have you pulling for the hero and even pitying the villain who is his own hero and can have hero tendencies. Think of Darth Vader who we find out is Luke Skywalker's father in STAR WARS. Suddenly we have a broader perspective of him that may allow sympathy to enter in.

I could say more, but I want to only entice you into reading this wonderful book. The author has been required reading for Hollywood scriptwriters since STAR WARS followed its guidelines and blew everyone away. He calls on many familiar movies we love and helps us to see why throughout the book. I have great appreciation for it because it will help me fix what's dead in my book and will make writing them easier from now on. I have the blueprint, thanks to Vogler.

You want to be a hero? Read this book and you will be.
