| markpal's Full Review: Barry Sears - The Zone: A Dietary Road Map to Lose... |
The zone philosophy is more than a diet, it is a lifestyle choice to be more fit and healthy. I have read many different philosophies of weight loss/maintenance/gain depending on your goals, and I must say that the Zone philosophy is the most effective and logical. There are many trendy new diets and fads coming along every day. Some are decent, many are schemes to put money in some charlatan's pockets.
The Zone succeeds because it is easy, and isn't tough to follow. You won't be hungry all the time, don't need to do anything drastic, and can eat most foods in moderation. Where the Zone succeeds is in combining your foods in simple manners.
The essence of the system is to eat each meal consisting of about 40% carbs, 30% protein, and 30% fats. Lots will see this relatively high fat content and panic. But the fats are the good fats, the mono-unsaturated type found many nuts, olive oil, guacamole, avacados, etc.
The only real foods that need to be eliminated or at least drastically reduced are the sugary and high starch type of carbohydrates, such as bread, pasta, and potatoes. They don't need to be eliminated, but one must become aware of how carb dense these foods are. So if you eat these, it must be in relatively small quantities, whereas if you eat your carbs from the preferred methods of fruits and vegetables, you can have more. The book gives good reference on how much of any food you can eat to stay within the Zone.
I have been eating this way for years now and I really love it. Sure you can cheat now and then, it helps keep the sanity. But it really is second nature now to eat within the philosophy and I enjoy it. The book is very straightforward and I definitely recommend it.
