AliventiAsylum's Full Review: Novartis TheraFlu Flu Chest Congestion 6
In the past when my family has gotten sick from a cold or the flu, I’ve used TheraFlu. The hot drink is usually soothing going down and feels like I am taking a hot toddy. In the past, the two flavors I’ve come across were the “regular” flavor which was a hot lemony drink, and a flavor like hot apple cider with cinnamon which I associated with their formula for sore throats.
With the way the flu hit the house and in particular me, there was a good deal of tightness in my chest and unproductive coughs. I was worried about phlegm in my chest that wasn’t coming out and when I was finally strong enough to drive to the nearest drugstore, I grabbed a box of TheraFlu Flu & Chest Congestion.
This box illustrates that it is a hot citrus flavor. I would guess the idea is to link the idea that when you’re drinking this you’re getting a good dose of vitamin C, which many people associate with medicinal and preventative values. The symptoms this formula is designed to relieve are chest congestion, sore throat, headache, body aches, and fever. Yup, that pretty much covered how I felt for about a week.
I used to make this by heating water in the kettle then adding a packet to it in a mug. The package now gives directions to add one of the packets to 8 ounces of cool water, stir, then heat in the microwave. I did it that way this time and it came out fine. Another new direction I noticed was that the drink needs to be consumed within 10-15 minutes. So much for a leisurely sip on a hot liquid. The directions are for adults and children over 12 years of age. Children under that age shouldn’t use this until consulting with a doctor.
The citrus flavor was different. Honestly, I prefer the apple cider/cinnamon flavor the best. I wasn’t crazy about the flavor of this at all. At least the hot lemon one would usually be soothing to me for a couple of days before I started getting sick of it. My daughter didn’t like this at all when she tried it, and it was something of a battle to get her to finish the drink within the 10-15 minute time frame.
TheraFlu Flu & Chest Congestion did do a good job on my flu symptoms, however. I noticed relief within about fifteen minutes of finishing the drink. My cough was much better and I didn’t have the tightness in my chest for quite some time. I found the hot liquid drink did soothe the sore throat nicely that both I and my daughter experienced the first few days of the onset of our flu. My fever seemed to come and go with no real pattern, so I can’t say for sure there was relief from the fever from drinking this. My guess would be that there was and the ups and downs I experienced had to do with the severity of my symptoms.
The active ingredients in each packet of TheraFlu Flu & Chest Congestion are acetaminophen (1000 mg), which acts as a pain and fever reducer, and guaifenesin (400 mg) which is an expectorant and will help make coughs more productive. I didn’t notice any side effects from this as I noticed when I used the TheraFlu Warming Relief. This does contain aspartame as a sweetener which some people have an aversion to. It doesn’t worry me to take it, especially in a medicine - I’d rather cut out the aspartame in diet drinks than in something that makes me feel better.
While the taste of TheraFlu Flu & Chest Congestion leaves room for improvement, it was definitely helpful in battling the symptoms I had from the flu. I like the hot drink over taking a pill or a liquid medicine and it definitely helped me feel better. There wasn’t much else to do except rest and let my illness run its course. At least by using this I was a bit more comfortable while that was happening.
