Colds stink. Especially now working at night there are issues with taking cold medicines that make me feel worse than I already do. One line of products I’ve taken over the years is from Theraflu. I like the hot liquid medicine as it has the feeling of a “hot toddy”. The hot liquid medicines are made in a variety of flavors and formulas. Some of the flavors I can take for a little while and then I have to switch off to something else. For this reason I usually plan on taking several different medications during the course of a cold.
The last one this winter I tried TheraFlu Severe Cold & Cough Natural Cherry Flavor when I arrived home after work. I had bought it earlier and it was sitting in my medicine cabinet. It had it’s good and bad points. The worst was the taste. While warm cherry flavor might sound good initially, in reality it tastes like hot Hawaiian Punch. Yuck. Drinking it was not an easy chore.
However, the plus what was it did for my symptoms. TheraFlu Severe Cold & Cough Natural Cherry Flavor is designed to relieve nasal congestion, cough, sore throat, runny nose, headache, body aches, and fever. I had all of those throughout the course of the cold. It affected me differently than colds normally do which I throw off pretty easily probably due to the crazy hours I work and sleep.
After I managed to drink the TheraFlu Severe Cold & Cough Natural Cherry Flavor, I have to say it definitely relieved my symptoms and allowed me to get some sleep. This doesn’t contain any alcohol but it will make a person drowsy. This is not a daytime medicine.
This formula of Theraflu is only available from behind the pharmaceutical counter now due to the fact that it contains pseudoephedrine Hcl (60 mg). However, I think that’s what makes it a better cold medicine overall. Other active ingredients include acetominophen (1000 mg), chlorpheniramine maleate (4 mg), and dextromethorphan Hbr (30 mg). This combination is what I find in many medicines designed to treat one of the symptoms listed. Combined together, it does a great job relieving all of these symptoms and letting me sleep even during the worst days of a cold.
Each packet should be dissolved in 6 ounces of hot water. No more than 4 packets should be taken over 24 hours, so TheraFlu Severe Cold & Cough Natural Cherry Flavor lasts about six hours each time. I think I used it twice since I couldn’t stand the taste longer than that. It’s a shame because it did a great job on my symptoms.
I will stick with Theraflu for cold relief but probably not this particular formula. The taste just isn’t for me and when I really have to fight to be able to drink the medicine it doesn’t make it easier to cope with a bad cold.
