This cold and flu season hasn’t been as bad in my house, but when it came it came on with a vengeance. We all spent the better part of two weeks coughing, sniffling, and hacking. Still, life had to go on and I needed to go to work. This meant I needed something that gave me relief but didn’t knock me for a wallop. A coupon is often all I need as incentive to try something different. In this case, it was TheraFlu Warming Relief Daytime Severe Cold. I have used the warming liquid TheraFlu for years and something I could bring with me to work and take as needed was promising. Here’s the thing, so many cold medicines have been reformulated this year due to the new regulations regarding pseudoephedrine. It’s very hard to find a medicine on the shelves that is totally effective against nasal congestion. Medicines that do contain pseudoephedrine now have to be asked for from the pharmacy and ID needs to be provided. If you live in an area like I do, that’s a problem when the pharmacies often shut down by 8 PM, even in stores such as Wal-Mart. I picked up the TheraFlu Warming Relief Daytime Severe Cold hoping for the best. The bottle looked larger than most other medicines and contained 8.3 ounces of medication. This is good because the dosage is 2 tablespoons every 4 hours for adults and children over age 12. I needed it. If that sounds like a lot, it is. However, it’s also necessary to take more and take it often due to the change of ingredients. I took the medication as directed and I did feel much better afterward. TheraFlu Warming Relief Daytime Severe Cold claims to relieve minor aches and pains, headache, minor sore throat pain, nasal congestion, cough due to minor throat and bronchial irritation, and to temporarily reduce fever. Nothing on chest congestion. It did help a lot with the nasal stuffiness but I found that I was never completely clear. It left my nose feeling like I do when I have minor allergies. This was better than what I had been feeling like but it wasn’t perfect. I was throwing a fever for part of the time I didn’t feel well, and it also helped with that. I woke up feeling much better. While TheraFlu Warming Relief Daytime Severe Cold is a daytime formula, I found it didn’t interfere with my sleeping. It didn’t make me drowsy either. It does contain 10% alcohol - more than most beers! I think this is why I was able to sleep after taking it even though it wasn’t a nighttime formula. In general, I liked TheraFlu Warming Relief Daytime Severe Cold. It did help with my symptoms and allowed me to function for work in the midst of a bad cold. It was far from perfect but it worked. I’ll have to see how this measures up against other cold medicines with the new formula, but it did a decent job. This medicine is approved for purchase with a FSA (flexible spending account).
