AliventiAsylum's Full Review: TheraFlu Warming Relief Daytime Severe Cold 8.3 oz...
The flu just went through my house, with everyone but the two who had the FLUMIST vaccine getting the dreaded disease (no, this is not a call for everyone to get the vaccine - how do you think the rest of us got it?) In that respect, I went through a lot of medicine in a two-week time. When it first hit, I loaded up on the one flu medicine I’ve used through the years and completely trust, Thera-Flu.
Thera-Flu Warming Relief Daytime Severe Cold was our first line of defense since I had a partial bottle here from last cold and flu season. It was perfect for the early symptoms many of us exhibited which included a sore throat, body aches, cough and fever. In addition, the medicine in here provides relief from nasal congestion and headaches. The nasal congestion didn’t turn up in us until the flu was on its way out, however, the worst for us was the sore throat in some and the chest congestion and cough in others, particularly me.
Each tablespoon of 15 mL contains 325mg of acetaminophen which acts as a pain reliever and fever reducer, 10mg of dextromethorphan HBr which acts as a cough suppressant, and 5mg of phenylephrine which acts as a nasal decongestant. I’ve found that this isn’t as effective on the nasal congestion. The most effective medicine I’ve found for that is behind the counter now, and you’ll have to ask for it from the pharmacist. It was fine for our early symptoms of the flu as none of us were suffering with nasal congestion initially.
For adults and children over 12, the dosage is 2 tablespoons or 30 mL. There are no dosage recommendations for those under 12 and the advice is to consult your physician before giving it to anyone under that age. The medicine has a cherry flavor to make it pleasant going down. My teen who used it wasn’t crazy about the taste or the warming sensation, which seems to come from the alcohol in it. It has an effect like when I take a shot of rumpleminze to make me feel warm.
I noticed after I took this that I was running to the bathroom. There’s an ingredient in this, maltitol, that is a sugar alcohol used in a lot of dietetic foods, particularly candy. Those usually carry warnings about how eating too much can cause diarrhea. There’s no such warning here, but it’s something to keep in mind. This didn’t affect my teen that way, but it did affect me.
I would say that Thera-Flu Warming Relief Daytime Severe Cold did an adequate job on the early symptoms of the flu we had. My fever would usually disappear in about a half hour after a period of sweating. My body aches were minimized and I felt more comfortable overall. My teen said it definitely helped on her sore throat, and she preferred taking the medicine in this form rather than the hot Theraflu drinks that I preferred.
I would recommend Thera-Flu Warming Relief Daytime Severe Cold with a caution. I think it works well on most symptoms, although not nasal congestion. I think people who are prone to problems with maltitol need to be aware that this ingredient is present in the medicine as well. Otherwise, having it in the house for the first line of defense when we started getting sick proved to be a good thing.
