Cons: The indicator "beep" is low sounding even on the highest setting; expensive test strips
The Bottom Line: So easy to use and needs a very small amount of blood.

My 71 year old mother was recently diagnosed with diabetes. I ended up doing alot of research on this topic and one of the first things I researched was the glucose monitors. I used this site to determine the best type of monitor for her and am so very grateful to the people who reviewed this particular brand. I figured I had to contribute too and write our review.
This is the only monitor I've ever seen and the first one we've owned, so I don't really know what's out there. But I can tell you this much, the freestyle is great! It's easy to use and pain free according to Mom. My mother is not electronically inclined and doesn't read a word of english. She has no problem using the freestyle at all. We went over the manual together when we first got it. I showed her how to use it once. The next two times I supervised. By the next day she was testing herself without me. It's so easy for her to use and it's very compact and comes with a travel case.
She says it's pain free. With this monitor, you can test other parts of the body besides the fingers. She doesn't need to because it doesn't hurt her at all. It needs only a small amount of blood so that you don't really need to prick very deep to get the necessary amount. Her friend showed my mother her monitor. I don't know what brand it was, but mom said it was awful. She had to prick herself numerous times with lots of squeezing and she still went through about 3 strips with no results because there wasn't enough blood. Her friend never tests herself anymore because of this. When she saw my mother's freestyle, she flipped. She couldn't believe how easy it was to use and how little blood it needed.
The freestyle is really awesome and I am so glad that we got it.
