I recently moved into a condominium with lots of windows. Because I did the purchasing while living in another state I did some of the redecorating I wanted in advance. I had the painting and kitchens and bathrooms done. I did feel I could get curtains as well since I knew my colors and how many windows needed curtains.
Unfortunately when I hung the living room curtains they were too short. I had the curtain rod lowered but they still looked short. I like a puddled look. It occurred to me looking at the curtains that I could rip out the large hem. This worked like a charm for the length. Then I had to hem them. Not being great with needle and thread I decided to use Therm O Web Ultra Hold Iron On.
This is a product is meant to bond material together when ironed. It's a no sew fuseable product. HeatnBond is great for crafts, hemming and works on leather, wood, cardboard, suede, denim, lame, foil and many other fabrications. It has three times the hold that similar products have yet you can remove it by heating it up again with an iron. HeatnBond is acid free and non toxic.
This particular item is 3/8" x 10 yards, enough to do tons of items. You can also get this product in larger sizes and larger widths for big projects. The price at Jo Ann's Fabrics was $2.39 and I had a 40% off coupon.
HeatnBond looks like white, rough, semi sheer ribbon. This is super strength. They offer other strengths. I was determined to do this with the curtains still hanging by pulling over an ironing board and draping the curtain over the board.
Instructions: You heat up your iron on the wool or medium marking. It is suggested that you pre wash all material without fabric softener and to pre test an area. Turn your garment or fabric inside out or over. Measure the amount you want to use and place your bonding ribbon rough side down on the inside of your folded hem. Press gently for 3-5 seconds. Slide your iron to the next section and repeat. Iron in 10" increments. If your material is thick then you increase your ironing time. Then turn your item right side out and iron again for an additional 3-5 seconds. You cannot sew through this bonding ribbon because of the adhesive, definitely not with a machine.
You can wash your material on delicate and a cold/cold setting and tumble dry on a low heat, delicate cycle. Do NOT dry clean. If you need to remove the hem or change it iron again and slowly pull once the adhesive has warmed up. You can remove any residual adhesive that is left by dry cleaning the item. I love this aspect. Notice, there is really no disparity in the dry clean do not dry clean instructions. While you want your bond to remain you do not dry clean. That's just a step when you want to remove it.
Other sizes:1/4 x 15 yds, 17" x 35 yards, 3/8" x 10 yards, 5/8 x 10 yds, 7/8" x 10 yds. They all run around $2.50 more or less. The package is a white cardboard hanging package with a hot pink background behind a wheel of white tape. Any good fabric store will carry this.
This is a real life saver if you aren't a strong seamstress or just want to do a hem job or craft quickly and easily yet not permanently. It's a very inexpensive fix.
