| jps246's Full Review: Robert Cahill - Things That Go Bump in the Night |
Along the same line of Cahills other books on New England mysteries, New Englands Things that go bump in the night is a collection scary stories from throughout New England.
Things that go bump in the night is a short collection of tales from throughout New England. In just 48 pages, Robert Ellis Cahill tells eight different tales of strangeness and spookiness from locations throughout mostly Massachusetts. The stories include:
Spooky Spirits of the Sea
The Delicate Demon of Dover
Visiting Our Local Vampires
Boogeyman of Beggerly
Phantom Ships
Haunted Islands of Boston Harbor
Never Catch Old Sasquatch
Werewolves and Witches of Dogtown
Researched by the author, the tales included in Things that go bump in the night are as factual as can be and clearly documented by Cahill, who has spent over 25 years researching paranormal, ghostly and strange phenomena throughout New England.
The stories are generally unknown to readers outside of the communities where they have occurred (I wasnt familiar with any of the stories when I first read the book), but they are all interesting and youll find out a thing or two about our New England towns. The hair on the back of my neck was sticking up at times and I got a few goose bumps here and there from reading the stories.
One of the most interesting stories I found was the one regarding the Demon of Dover. Dovers not too far from where I live and I was able to go out and find the location where the small, nocturnal gnome like creature was spotted. I didnt see the Demon, but it was really neat to follow up reading the book like that.
The other stories are just as entertaining, interesting and hair raising. They all provide an excellent starting point for anyone who is looking to further explore the supernatural in New England.
Details
Coming in at only 48 pages, each story is at most 4 or 5 pages in length. Black and white photographs and/or reproductions accompany some of the stories in the book. The writing is clear and to the point, but leaves that proverbial door open enough to make the reader wonder about the story.
The author has clearly researched and documented (as best as can be with a story of the supernatural) these stories and should you go to the various locations, the book provides an interesting background for your visit. Sadly, the book does not include a bibliography that would have made finding out more information about these occurrences easier.
My Feelings
Ive always loved tales and stories of the supernatural and Things that go bump in the night is an enjoyable diversion for me. Not having been at all the locations in the book, I cant vouch on whether or not youll see a ghost or otherwise experience the strange (and that probably depends on whether or not you believe in them), but if you are at all interested in the supernatural and New England, this is a worthy book for your collection.
