Not always does the back catalogue match the newer attempts, but some writers will fake through. Nice review...its on my tops of 05

I liked them quite a bit when I heard The Moon album, was happy for them when they became successful, got Lonesome Crowded West, liked it, but now I'm just tired of them. Good to know I've already heard the best of them...

Most casual Modest Mouse fans have trouble with this album. It's rough around the edges and drags sometimes but for the most part it works for me. And even though Brock's voice isn't really "pleasant" in the tradition sense I just love how he uses it. His paranoid as f*ck screaming in Lounge gives me chills and his lisping in Ionizes and Atominezes actually makes the song better. I even love Beach Side property. But what really makes this album great like all the others is the guitar playing. The guitar lines are always catchy, creative, spacey, and full of resonance. I could listen to the end of Lounge forever.

Thanks, Joe, for stopping by. I don't speak of Lonesome... because, well, I haven't heard it. I've now gotten four discs. This one though? I'm just not keen on. I guess it is Moon & Antarctica that sits best with me. It's clean and emotional but not TOO clean as is a problem (as you mention) with the most recent release.

Thanks again for commenting.

I guess I'm a major fan (Reply to this comment)

This is the first album of MM's I got about 7 years ago, and I love it. "Jesus Christ..," Dramamine." "She Ionizes" made me fall in love with them and "Talking ... About a Pretty Sunset," is many long term Modest Mouse fan's favoroite.

But I prefer their next album in The Lonesome Crowded West, part of their charm that was lost on Good News, it was too fresh and too clean, they grew up. If you would to be supremely offended by a purchase check out sad sappy sucker, a collection fo songs off Isaac Brock's answering machine when he was 14-16. That's for the true hardcore fans.

One day I'll et around to reviewing their whole catalgue, maybe after I graduate in May. Good review.

Long live Lonesome Crowded West.

EXACTLY. I feel like a jerk for buying it off the shelf for full price--at least Best Buy's full price. It sucked. Unless something major changes they've soured me on much of their back catalogue.

Hmph.

Thanks for the comment, BTW.

I guess I should take a bow :)

This album is so inconsistent it makes me a little ill.

Thanks for the comment, Paul.

I don't know, Eric. Have you heard Moon & Antarctica? If not, that would be my suggestion. Not this...gasp...crap.

don'tcha hate it when bands make you go and buy their entire back catalogue like that, even the crappy ones? ;)

anyway, i doubt i'm a rabid enough fan of modest mouse to go out and buy everything they've ever done ("good news..." was decent and "antarctica" was pretty damn fine); thankfully, you've informed me of one i definitely don't need to even consider... at any point.

cheers,

After I loved GNFPWLBN (wow... that's a long acronym) and TMAA, I decided to randomly get one of their older albums. Unfortunately, this one was on sale so I grabbed it. I feel pretty much the same way you do. "Dramamine" is possibly my favorite Modest Mouse song, and "Break Through" is one of their best, but aside from that there's really nothing memorable. Now I can't decide whether to get one of their other albums or just stick with the ones I have.

I cited this album as the reason why I loathed MM when I first heard them. It's quite a bad album, but thankfully they took a step in the right direction when they got to The Moon & Antarctica. Your review provides an impressively accurate summary that I can't agree more with, down to the last detail. Marvelous work, madame.

Strange Enough... (Reply to this comment)

...maybe I could tolerate this more than "Good News..." which just sounded simple-minded (lyrically, not musically) to me. Maybe I just won't really enjoy this band. (Sigh.)

Nice job.

peace & love,
