| wogerwabbit9's Full Review: TiVo Series2â„¢ TCD649080 (80 GB) Video Recorder |
I have had my Series 2 dual tuner 80 GB TiVo for almost 3 years now and I want to just say I cannot imagine my life with out it anymore. I don't know how I used to watch LIVE tv with commercials and without my TiVo.
It literally knows me now. It knows what genres I like and recommends me programs I end up liking. It automatically suggests that I add an hour to the recording when when I record a LIVE game. It just works. It's logically designed and seems like the people who made the software used common sense and not just some random menus to get the work done.
The Good Stuff:
Very responsive: TiVo software in general is the best software out there as compared to the DVRs provided by the satellite or cable companies. I have an HD Comcast DVR and the software is simply horrible. I press the rewind or forward button and then press play and the DVR sometimes keeps rewinding or forwarding or responds after 5 seconds when the scene has passed. And I am not the only person who has this complaint. All my friends who have Comcast boxes have the same gripe. The TiVo software is so good that Comcast is now running trials in the east coast with their DVRs having the TiVo software licensed on them to see if the customers like it.!
Recommendations actually work: After you have used your TiVo for a while and marked what programs you like and what you don't, it becomes pretty good at guessing what new programs you would like. I am always surprised when I look under the "TiVo Recommendations" section to find something I really like listed. :)
Dual Tuner: Having the Dual tuner helps a lot. You can record 2 shows concurrently while you watch a 3rd channel (in case you want to watch LIVE tv. Who does nowadays anyways?)
Enough Storage: This model of the TiVo has 80 B storage space. This is definitely an upgrade from the previous 40 GB version where you had to clean up your recordings once a week if you were recording a lot at "Best Quality".
Extras: You can connect to different web services like Flickr, Picasa to view your web albums on your tv, listen to music online etc.
The Not-So-Good Stuff:
Can Get Pricey: I got my TiVo for a good deal. I got a 1 year free service with my purchase. But otherwise, it can get a little annoying to see that $16.99 pop up on your credit card bill every month for the TiVo service to download program guides and other content. You usually end up paying around $14.99 to rent a DVR from your cable company but then you are not throwing down the initial money to buy the device in the first place. Plus you can always turn in your rented box and get the upgraded one when the cable company launches a new box.
Long Set Up: The initial set up can take a while. Sometimes it can be tricky to get the internet connectivity going. But that is the trickiest part. Also, once you have it set up to work with your network, it's smooth sailing for more or less forever.
