My all time favorite kitty litter product
Written: Jul 27 '01
Pros:Best cat litter I have ever used, has other uses as well
Cons:Expensive
The Bottom Line: I'm going to keep using this one!
I have had cats all my life. I have used just about every kind of litter from regular clay, to clumping, and now crystals.
The crystals are made of silica. This is a super absorbent material that is made from sand. (don't ask me how!) It is the same material that is used by manufacturers to keep their products dry in shipping and storage. Have you ever bought an electronic product, and found that little packet that says "Desiccant - DO NOT EAT!" Some clever person figured out another use for silica - cat litter.
When I first bought this product, I tested the absorbency of the crystals. I put them in a bowl and poured water on them. With a crackling sound like rice crispies, the water was quickly absorbed. Cool!
This product works by absorbing all the moisture in the cat urine and solid waste. Without moisture, there's no smell. I have 3 cats and 4 litter boxes. The smell is much less (almost non existent) than with the clumping litter.
When silica cat litter first came out, the pieces of silica were round. This caused a lot of problems, because they would roll all over the place! Litter crystals are little chunks that do not roll. They can get on the floor, but I find the problem to be much easier to deal with than all that sand getting tracked on the floor from clumping litter.
I also use this product for other household uses. I put it at the bottom of my trash cans. This way, if any icky liquids leak out, they will get absorbed. I have also used it to clean up spills. Our washer overflowed in the garage, and after mopping it I used some of the crystals to absorb the excess moisture against some of our shelves. The water got underneath them, and they soaked up some water. I put a layer of crystals up against them on the floor, and it dried them out completely overnight and there was no musty smell.
The crystals are pristine and white with blue specks. They look a little like ice. When the cat goes number 2, if they don't bury it properly, it looks really gross against that background! Sort of like when you are walking in a Winter Wonderland and than see a big dog doo steaming in the snow! I have all the cat boxes screened off so you don't see into them now.
Changing the boxes is cleaner, less smelly and much easier than with the clumping litter. I think litter crystals are slightly more expensive than other types of litter, but to me it's worth it!
