| lorace's Full Review: Tilia FoodSaver Canisters (3 jars) 01300 |
Do you ever wish, after you've made a purchase, that you'd bought the accessories to go with it? I usually do, however, when I bought my Tilia FoodSaver last March the only Tilia accessories on the shelves were the bags. Which I did buy.
The FoodSaver came with a great video on which I saw the Vacuum Packaging Canister Set. The video made them fascinating, but I thought I didn't need them, so let it go. But as time went on, and I learned to love the sealer, I wanted to get the canisters so I could avail myself of the great features of the Foodsaver.
On the Tilia web site, they were quite expensive, so I purchased them from Amazon.com. I ordered 2 sets for $19.99 each with free shipping.
Description of the Canisters
They are Clear and Transparent (of course) and come in three sizes to a box in the model I chose. There are many other choices of styles and sizes that one could make. The sets I purchased came in :
2 ½ quart size-----7" high
1 ½ quart size-----6" high
¾ quart size-------5" high
They are made of acrylic and look and feel like glass, but they're not. The manual says they can be put on the top shelf of a dishwasher, yet I always wash them by hand.
Each canister has its own lid, which is made of a white Bakelite material, as close as I can describe it, and sports a vacuum valve and also a little gray release valve on top.
The lids have a sturdy rubber gasket around them which make them fit firmly into the canisters, keeping them airtight. The Lids cannot be washed in a dishwasher!
Uses for the FoodSaver Canisters
The FoodSaver storage bags are great to foods you want to freeze, but some things are not suited for bags.
The box states that these canisters (when used with the vacuum) keep food fresh up to 5 times longer and they're perfect for crushable things (like chips and crackers, etc.).
It lists these items as suggestions for storing:
Coffee
Cookies
Flour
Rice
Nuts
Cereal
One thing to note, though, is that you use these canisters in the Refrigerator or on the counter or pantry, but they can't be used in a Microwave or placed in a freezer.
Directions for using these Vacuum Packaging Canisters
You place the ingredients in a canister, leaving 3 inches at the top, put the lid on and place the accessory hose from your Foodsaver in the spot on the lid. There is a special button on the Tilia Foodsaver, which starts the vacuum process.
Just figure it will be louder and longer to vacuum the air out of the canisters then it is with the bags. I love it, actually, because I know that my items are being protected.
The box tells us that air is the big culprit in food freshness and causes food to lose flavor and nutritional value. I think we all know that and that's why a person wants a Foodsaver in the first place.
Before vacuuming, you can't press the valve on the lid down, but when the vacuuming is finished, the valve on the lid looks the same, but, actually, it is spring loaded and you can now push it down to release the vacuum when you want to. You'll hear the air whoosh in and you're ready to remove the lid and take possession of the contents. It's really fun.
My uses for the Vacuum Canisters
Leftover vegetables I cook or steam more frozen veggies than we need for a meal and store the excess in a canister and place it in the refrigerator. Generally, I put a tape on the lid with the date that I sealed the canister.
Leftover Gravies and Soups self-explanatory.
Saltines It used to be that after I opened the saltines, they'd get stale on the shelves. Not so in the canister. The same goes for any kind of cookies or crackers or chips. It is so great to seal the freshness in.
Brown Sugar Hardened brown sugar has been a nemesis all my days, and this canister is wonderful, keeping it soft and very usable.
The box and directions list only dry ingredients, so I called Tilia on their 800 number and asked if things like veggies and gravies and soups could be sealed in them. They said you could seal anything you want in them, which was a good feature, I thought.
Parting thoughts and Recommendation
I really don't know if other sealing devices have an accessory that will fit into these lids, so I am speaking mainly to persons with a Tilia Foodsaver with the accessory hoses.
If you don't have the Canisters, let me tell you from experience, that you'll be glad if you buy some.
They truly are wonderful, fun to use, and very, very practical. I'm so happy not to have stale products or not to have to throw leftovers away because I kept them too long.
I think of new uses every day and wonder how I managed prior to buying the Tilia Foodsaver. I give these Canisters 5 stars and even if I couldn't seal them, I'd be proud to display them in my kitchen.
Thanks for reading my review. I hope it's been helpful.
