Pros:Function, Design, Comfort, Power Transfer, Ability to Service

Cons:Kind of Pricey , A little on the heavier side

The Bottom Line: A TIMEless addition to your biking equipment. With the factory refurbish program, this could be your last pedal!

I have done a few reviews on Cycling, including some on the subject of Pedals. I have owned bikes made of different materials and used just about every shoe and pedal combination available. I have decided that for me Carbon Bikes ( Calfee Design ) have the best combination of weight, stiffness and comfort. The Carnac Shoe ( TRS 5C ) gives me the stiffness and comfort that I desire. As for a choice of race wheel sets I have gone with Zipp ( 404's ). This leads into the area of my favorite choice of pedals. The TIME EQUIPE PRO MAGNESIUM gets the nod.

TIME has been a leader in pedal design. They are a very popular pedal in Europe ( French Made ). The reason is the research and development of their pedals is second to none. Some of the technical attributes are:

Bioposition

In simple terms, this is the distance the foot is from the spindle of the pedal. The closer the foot is to the spindle, the more efficient your pedal stroke will be. The Bioposition of the Time Equipe Pro Magnesium is 8.5 mm.

Two Piece Cleat Design

Unlike with most other pedal designs which have a single piece cleat design that basically sits on top of the pedal and spindle, the TIME two piece cleat actually goes in back and in front of the spindle. This give a low Bioposition and Time claims a power advantage. This occurs for two reasons. You can duplicate a circular motion better with your foot closer to the spindle. You can create more power with three surfaces to push and pull on that just one surface. Since the TIME cleat is positioned on top of the spindle, behind the spindle and in front of the spindle. It acts like a "claw" and grabs the pedal. This translates to more power.

Large Platform Pedal

The TIME pedals in general have a large platform that makes real contact with your shoe. This makes for a more stable foot position and helps in the transfer of your pedal stroke to the crank arms. A simple analogy: Pushing with your pinky finger will not exert as much force and control as pushing with your thumb.

Multireflex Release System

This is a safety issue. The release of the shoe from the pedal is independent of the tension gripping the cleat. The release is instant, not gradual like some pedals with tension adjustments. TIME claims that you will not pull out of the cleat accidentally.

BioPerformance

TIME builds in 5 degrees of angular float and 5 mm of lateral float to minimize any knee problems.

Weight of the pedals

The two road specific pedals are 412 grams for the Magnesium version and 358 grams for the Ti version ( they substitute a Ti axle for the steel axle ). The price of the Time Equipe Pro Magnesium is $199.99 and the Time Equipe Pro Ti is $289.99. Neither of the pedals are cheap, but the value of the Time pedal is priceless.

Cleat Material

Time used to make the front and rear cleats out of metal. The cleats tended to last forever but the pedal body would wear out. Now Time has a metal rear cleat and a plastic resin front cleat. The plastic front cleat does tend to wear out and can be replaced for $9.99 a pair. The rear cleats can be replaced for $16.99 a pair. I have found that the best method is to replace the rear cleats every second or third time you replace the front cleats. You can also go by the shiny factor-if the rear cleat become a bit shiny, it should probably be replaced.

Time rebuild policy

Time pedals can be sent back to the factory for a complete rebuild. The price will vary with what needs to be replaced. They do a great job when it comes to replacing the bearings. You can even substitute the "ti" axle for the "steel" one if you want. They can replace the pedal body if it becomes damaged after an accident or some other reason.

Shoe compatibility

They are of course a perfect match for Time shoes and with an adapter, they are compatible with all LOOK DRILLED SHOES.

All in all, the Time Equipe Pro Magnesium is a superb bike pedal. The quality and design is second to none. The two minor drawbacks are the price and the pedal weight. If you are on a budget, they are quite pricey. If you must have the lightest of everything, these will not be the pedals for you. However, if you are looking for a proven performer the TIME EQUIPE PRO MAGNESIUM could be your last pedal you use. They also come in standard Red and White Bodies. There are some "TEAM" colors available.
