| modernmarvel's Full Review: Tiny Love Symphony-in-Motion Mobile with Remote Co... |
We got this mobile as a gift for our third baby. We had used less sophisticated mobiles for our other children and thought they were fine. However, I find our third baby absolutely LOVES this mobile and I would highly recommend it.
WHAT YOU GET
This mobile is made up of three arms. Each arm has a goofy-looking animal (elephant, giraffe and horse) on it with pop out black and white eyes. Each animal is covered by a plastic umbrella with a swirl on the top. On top of the umbrella are three cloth shapes. The animals, shapes and umbrellas are made up of very bright contrasting colors. There are a few black and white pieces for the youngest babies but this mobile is basically an explosion of color. As the mobile turns, the animals also turn around and the shapes above the umbrellas move along the arms. This creates tons of motion that baby loves. My baby started looking at this mobile when she was two weeks old. As she got a little older, she started kicking her legs and waving her arms just at the sight of it. She even coos at the animals.
The structure of the mobile is quite sophisticated. A bright blue ball is at the top of the arm. The arm is a brightly colored - fabric covered piece of plastic. It goes up quite high to support the large mobile. The arm can be partially rotated so you can swing the mobile over the crib and then out of the crib.
The base of the mobile clips to the edge of the crib or, in our case, changing table. The front of the base has three buttons for various kinds of music and an on/off button. The back of the base looks like a green clover. It is used to clamp the mobile to the railing of the crib.
My mobile also comes with a remote control. The remote control is plastic and has a cute little squid-like stuffed fabric thing on it. We have never found a use for the remote control.
THE MUSIC
This mobile is supposed to be educational as well as entertaining. To that end, the mobile plays a piece from each of Bach, Beethoven and Mozart. You can select 15 minutes from each composer or the mobile will play a combination of the three. There is also a high/low volume control. I wish the music didn't shut off automatically after 15 minutes since my baby seems to like the mobile for up to 20 minutes.
The manual comes with a lengthy explanation of why the pieces of music they have selected are best for your baby. I find this mostly bunk. I agree that babies like classical music and this can be good for them. I doubt this mobile is building brain cells any more than any other mobile we have bought. Besides the music from the mobile sounds very simplistic - as though a slightly out of tune piano is tapping out the melodies. You don't hear an orchestra playing. I think that if you really wanted to build brain cells, you could get one of those clip on cds for the crib and play really classical music for baby. That said, our baby likes the music and LOVES this mobile.
OUR EXPERIENCE
Have I said our baby LOVES this mobile enough times yet? We originally clipped it to the crib. Even from birth she had some interest in it. Around 2 weeks she started to get excited every time she saw it. She immediately started pedaling her legs and waving her arms when we turned it on. She even coos to it. When she was very little, she could take about 10 minutes of it and then would fuss because, I think, she was over stimulated from it. We couldn't leave it in the crib because the mobile got her active, not sleepy. So, we clipped it on the changing table. She would lay on the changing table and watch it several times a day - happy and contented.
At 4 weeks, we decided she couldn't stay on the changing table. We moved the pack and play next to the changing table. The mobile is far too heavy to clip to the side of the pack and play so we left it clipped to the changing table but hung over the pack and play. Now, at two months, she lays in the pack and play and watches the mobile from there several times a day for up to twenty minutes at a stretch (enough time to take a shower and get dressed). Since I have two older children, I appreciate these opportunities to leave baby content and entertained.
QUALITY
This mobile generally works fine for us. The batteries are very long-lasting. The mobile seems durable and we have given it quite a bit of use over the last two months. All the parts work well EXCEPT that it is so heavy it does not clip well to the side of the crib or changing table. No matter how much we tighten it, it seems to eventually fall over. You have to check almost daily to be sure that the clamp is still tight and we tighten it at least once a week. This constant upkeep can be annoying, but as I said before, our baby LOVES this mobile so I am willing to put up with this flaw.
FINAL RECOMMENDATION
It would never have occurred to me to purchase this mobile. We got it as a gift and I am very glad we did. Baby clearly loves this mobile and we get far more of a reaction from her than we did with our other children with lesser mobiles. I don't necessarily believe this mobile is building brain cells - however it does entertain baby and gives me enough time to take a shower which is priceless. The other thing to know is that this mobile is for entertainment not inducing sleep. We use it outside of the crib. You may want to get something more soothing for inside the crib.
