Either way it is doing a good job. The 983 series Titliest drivers are their first true large driver head. Anybody who has been at the range recently knows that often it is no longer, what driver are you hitting, but K or E? And this is not without reason, as I will explain below.
Looks:
The first thing everybody notices about a driver, the looks. Even though this driver has followed the big head trend, it hasn't lost its classic looks as many other drivers such as the TaylorMade R-series. It maintains a similar shape to the previous Titliest drivers with little differences other then the darker paint and slight alteration to the bottom design.
Feel:
As a note, I forgot about this review and never finished it a while ago. Since then, I really haven't hit any other drivers, and if I have, it was probably a K with a different shaft. But, noting that, the feel of this driver is very solid. It isn't, of course, soft and sweet feeling like old persimmon woods but on the other hand, it doesn't feel like a tin can like so many other oversized drivers. The driver also does give decent feedback on the quality of the shot. If you hit it solid, you will get that sweet, solid ball compression feel. On the other hand, mis-hits are registered as a harsher feel.
Performance:
Now that we've got looks and feel out of the way let's get down to the most important factor: performance. When hit well, the driver provides a pretty good, high launch angle and bores pretty well. When I first started using the driver I thought that it was too high. After getting used to it, and having reassuring comments from Titliest fitting experts I believe it is just about right. The distance is good, although I haven't personally compared it side by side to anything. One of my friends also has the 983 and says that he would never go back to the Nike driver he used to use.
Recommendations:
As always, when getting a driver, as with any golf club, get it fit with the proper length and shaft. The right shaft for you can make a huge difference, often times more so then the driver it self. Mine has a Graphite Design YS-8.1 in an X. They have a range of shafts so you might want to check out their site at www.gdintl.com.
