| kungfulu2's Full Review: Titleist HP Eclipse Golf Balls |
With just about everyone and their brother jumping on the "golf ball bandwagon" lately, how is one to decide which golf ball is best for them? Most golfers are able to determine which golf ball to use by assessing their shot distance, trajectory, spin and other such factors. First, however, a word of advice: If you tend to shoot in the mid 60s (on nine holes), don't worry about what kind of ball you play. If you are a high handicapper, it is completely unnecessary to spend over $15 on a specific brand of balls. For the rest of us, a good golf ball can help us shave off those last few unnecessary strokes.
It just so happens that I had been playing the Titleist DT 2 Piece for the past two years, for it is the ball used by my high school golf team. We used it because it was supposed to be a durable golf ball that still had decent feel around the green. Our coach offered to buy us one sleeve of each golf ball Titleist makes, in order to determine which ball we should use this season. After hitting shot, after shot, after shot which all nine of Titleist's golf balls, it was clear to us the the new Titleist HP Eclipse stood above and beyond the rest.
The HP Eclipse gives you a great feel from the first drive on an opening hole. I was astonished to see how low and piercing my drives were, even though the ball felt quite soft at impact. Even more impressive was the roll I got on my drives, for I noticed a consistent increase in distance with all of my woods. The ball stayed low with my irons, but landed very soft on greens. Greenside play was great in the fact that the ball provided optimal spin, but was not so soft that speed control became difficult. I felt comfortable playing the Titleist HP Eclipse from all situations, with all of my clubs.
Despite the great feel of this golf ball, price remains an issue. At $44, the HP Eclipse is not Titleist's most pricey golf ball, but it still puts a hefty burden on many of our wallets. Unlike Titleist's high-end golf balls, you can play the HP Eclipse for many rounds, so you will not be faced with purchasing a dozen golf balls every two weeks. If you are not opposed to spending this much money on a great golf ball, the Titleist HP Eclipse will prove its worth after just one round.
