| hwz1's Full Review: Titleist Irons DCI 762B |
I gave the new Titleist DCI irons a try for a weekend and was not at all surprised by what I found. Lets face it, Titleist knows how to produce a really good iron and have done so for many years. For years I have been a Ping man and really have no intention of changing unless I find something that fully blows my mind. The DCI 762's came close.
WHAT DID I LIKE:
1. First of all, the 762's are a good looking set of irons. I am a big fan of looking down and seeing a club that appeals to the eye. My basic premises is that if you are comfortable with the look of the club, your mind is clear of one negative thought already. The 762's pass this test with flying colors.
2. The 762's have a good feel in your hands. Before you even hit a shot, you need to like how the club feels in your hand. I like the feel, but this is a personal decision. You need to decide for yourself how the clubs feel in your hands.
3. Performance. I think we all agree that regardless of how a club looks and feels, if the performance is not up to par, the other attributes do not matter. I hit the ball quite well with the 762's. The feel was solid and relatively forgiving for a blade iron. I was reminded of the feel and forgiveness of my I3's. I was able to work the ball right and left and hit it high or low without any difficulty.
I might have gained five yards over my I3's, but would not read to much into this. The weather was warmer and we may have had a slight wind at out backs. Regardless, I can assure you that I was not hitting the ball any shorter.
4. Titleist does a good job of custom fitting. The company provides numerous options for flex points, flex, torque and also different shaft materials. While all manufacturers have some of these options, most do not offer so many and make them so available to the general public.
WHAT I DID NOT LIKE:
1. I already to you that I love the look of the 762's, but at the same time, I have a problem with the look. Titleist has always favored a gleaming silver appearance to their clubs while most other manufacturers favor a smokey gray color. The problem I have with the 762's is that they can produce a wicked glare when the sun is at a certain angle. A glare that leaves you temporarily blinded and this is not a good thing when you are trying to hit a shot.
I am not sure why Titleist continues to be one of the manufacturers who has not changed to glare reducing shade. The sparkling silver appearance looks great, but is not entirely functional. Titleist made the change with their putters years ago, but have been holding out on their irons. I am hopeful that they will change their minds, but with the success they have had, I doubt they will anytime soon.
RECOMENDATION:
I would strongly consider the DCI 762 irons, but with a reservation. My thought is that you should try them at various times of the day in order to determine if the glare is going to be a problem. If it is not, I would not hesitate in purchasing these clubs.
