Written: Feb 02 '04
Product Rating:
Pros: Spin, flight, and workability...
Cons: Price but that's all...
The Bottom Line: Buy it if you play all the time and can hit consistent straight shots. If only a weekend player, don't buy unless you absolutely have to get a good ball...
For the better or more "veteran" golfer, it all comes down not only to swing fundamentals but even equipment. Most people on tour play with brands such as Callaway, Ping, Cleveland, and Titleist And the names that are most famous for golf balls, Titleist and Callaway. Callaway is famous for the their Red and Blue hexagonal dimpled golf balls while Titleist is famous for their Pro V1 golf balls.
Titleist claims that their Pro V1 is the #1 ball played on tour and I don't disagree. All the time I see their ball played and the pros love them.
Look
The look of the Pro V1 is contemporary with just a bit of clean gleam on the cover. The outer cover of the ball is coated with a Urethane Elastomer that allows the ball to have a thin cover and a big core. Basically it protects the ball for minor scratches but is guaranteed to scratch when contact with the ball and cartpath.
Layers
The Pro V1 has three layers. A main core the takes up most of the space, a ionomer casing, and a final layer of Elastomer. The main core is a soft but solid center that is formulated to give a piercing ball flight but a steep angled descent to "bite" on the green. The next casing is just a layer that increases the speed and spin of the ball. The final layer is a very thin layer to put the aerodynamics and deliver a consistent ball flight.
Trajectory
The trajectory is meant to have a low ascending flight with low spin rate on drives and high on irons. It is consistent which allows for you to aim right at target and not have to lay up to the side of the bunker. It almost never rolls over and only will happen if you hit it thin. I'm happy with the ball flight and can always depend on it's consistency.
Feel
The feel is incredible. Don't be fooled by what the box says, this ball is a bit harder than others on the market but can be used for swings about 95+mph. To me it's very soft but controlable. With driver it delivers a low spin rate but a piercing ball flight that seems to always updraft and suddenly fall at a steep angle. On long irons they are impressive. It produces a low trajectory that still is very forgiving on mis-hits. It does tend to shock the hand if off too much the sweet spot. On mid to short irons they are explosive. They seem to literally jump off the clubface and stop on a dime. They are very accurate and can consistently have a good ball flight. I especially love the ball on pitching and lob wedges. With pitching wedge, I consistently have a 145 yrd shot. Never more than a yard of two away from target.
Drop and Stop
The Pro V1 has a special casing that has a very high spin rate on irons that always hit the green and barely budge. On short irons the either bite and spin back or release a foot or so. You can attack the pin and don't have to worry about going over. A must have for par 3s. Out of the bunker they bite. Just aim a few feet short of the hole and it will release right to target.
Conclusion
With many balls out there on the market it can get confusing. Price is a major factor in most consumers. The Pro V1 delivers high spin, piercing trajectory, and a consistent playability. With the ball being on the hefty side($50) it is not recommended for the average golfer but if you want a great ball that delivers all that you want, the Pro V1 is the way to go. But if you have a really high swing speed, try the Pro V1x for a lower spin rate and straighter flight. The Pro V1x is for the harder hitters.
