| strategery's Full Review: Titleist Vokey Chrome Wedges |
You know, you really don't make anything working at a golf course. Seems you just take it out in trade!
Case in point, a couple of weeks back one of our members came in with a Titleist sand wedge that he had grown tired of. After assuring me that it was a fine club that had hardly been used, he wondered if we could sell it for him. Sure Jack, I think I just might know someone who secretly lusts for a quality sand wedge. How much do you want,er,just in case that someone wants it?
Well, I've tried that beautiful Titleist Vokey wedge out on the range, course and even out of the sand. Sure, I wanted it right from the start; but I'm still going to give it a close check.
The club has a good look and feel. There is some rust on the club face but I have been told that this is actually beneficial. Apparently the grooves wear a little and this makes the club more responsive. Kinda' like a fine wine I guess. The grips have held up well and are still supple. Overall, the club has worn well.
The club has 51 degrees of loft and 7 degrees of bounce. This is good especially for my type of swing. this combination of loft and bounce promotes a lower than normal flight path on shots from the fairway. I play the ball back in my stance and the lower amount of bounce helps keep the club from digging into the ground.
I really like this club on short pitches a greenside chips. I like to take the low route to the green and play alot of bump and run type shots. The Vokey wedge gives me great playability on these short game shots. It took surprisingly little time for me to become comfortable with the feel.
Ironically, one of the weakest feature of this sand wedge is playing shots out of the sand. Because of the reduced bounce, I am sometime making too much contact on explosion shots on bunker shots just off the green. This problem occurs in softer sand more than bunker where the sand is packed down. Still, in this instance, I'm inclined to blame the golfer and not the club.
What about price ? These things are expensive. They usually sell for upwards of $100. I think I can talk my buddy down to about half that. He may need a choice tee time one weekend. Seriously though, after putting this wedge thru a stern testing, I'm impressed enough to buy it.
