| supersaiyan23's Full Review: Titleist Vokey Chrome Wedges |
The Titleist Vokey wedge comes in a number of different lofts. The available lofts are 52, 54, 55, 56, 58, 60 and 65 degrees. I currently play the 52 and 58 and I am most pleased with the ability of these wedges. The Vokey sets up nicely at address and is very pleasing to the eye. The club will rust after some use, which is good because the rust adds softness and touch to the wedge.
This wedge excels from just about every lie I've ever had. The 52 degree loves the bunkers. This club slides through sand with ease and provides plenty of backspin out of green side bunkers. I usually use the 52 from 100 yards and in. Anywhere outside of 100 yards and you lose a lot of accuracy and control.
One drawback to this otherwise excellent club is the tendency of the shot to leak off to the right if you do not get your hands through the ball.
The 58 degree offers excellent play-ability around the green and from about 60 yards and in. It has a lower degree of loft then the typical lob wedge, but you can open the face to get added loft on your shots. This is an excellent wedge for short bunker shots and flop shots. The club head sweeps underneath the ball with ease and you can put plenty of spin on the ball from most lies.
I recommend this club to golfers in the mid to low handicap range. For use around the green this wedge comes in a variety of lofts that can be used by most any golfer. The more common wedge lofts of 52, 56 and 60 degrees can be used by any golfer of average to excellent ability. The other lofts, 54, 58 and 65 are for the golfer looking to add a third wedge to their bag for more green side versatility.
I would not recommend this wedge to the mid to high handicap golfers for shots outside of 90-100 yards. This wedge requires excellent swing mechanics to control from those distances and the performance drops off quite a bit from anywhere outside the 100 yard range. This is most likely due to the stiffness of the shaft. These wedges use tour performance steel shafts and they are quite stiff. Stiffness could be a problem for the player who has a slower swing speed. That is why I would recommend this club for the more aggressive swinging lower handicap golfers.
In the past year, Titleist has added a new version to their Vokey lineup of wedges. Vokey's now come with a new "Raw" Steel finish. These Raw Steel wedges are quickly replacing the chrome model Vokey. Raw steel has two distinct advantages over its chrome counterpart. 1: The raw steel will rust over time which helps the clubhead spin the ball more easily. 2: As the face of the wedge rusts, it makes the clubhead softer which gives the player more feel during shots.
I currently use a 56 degree Vokey Raw Steel sandwedge. I am very pleased with the way the club performs. The rusty look also gives the club a more traditional look. One of the few complaints I have heard about this wedge is the way it rusts. Some golfers just don't like the look of rust all over their club. If you don't mind the new look, the new Titleist Vokey Raw Steel wedges are worth a serious look!
This wedge is a sure bet for the low handicap golfer who is looking to add precision and versatility to his or her wedge game and green side play. This club can run anywhere from 80 to 120 dollars, depending on where you buy it and depending on the material the club head is made of. Most pro shops retail for around 120, but you can usually get one around 105 at your local golf store or pro shop. Another good thing to do is check out online auction sites such as Ebay.com and Golfwarehouse.com. Shop around to get the best price. As with most other Titleist products, you can't go wrong buying this club. Hope you enjoy your Vokey Wedge(s) as much as I do.
