MrBibbledog's Full Review: Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six (Mac)
Seems I'm doing quite a bit of raving lately. Great video games have been coming out by the hordes, so much, in fact, that one neither has time nor place to experience them all. In short: It is a good time to be a gamer.
On that note, let me say that Rouge Spear is THE BEST MULTIPLAYER GAME EVER MADE. It's so great, that I can't even bring myself to bother playing the single player. (Ok, so I played it once. It was fun, but could never compare to the multiplayer experience it gives.)
Rogue Spear is the sequel to Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six (based on his novel.) It takes place at the end of the century/ millenium, where small-arms, anti-terrorist combat is the new standard of warfare.
Spear is unlike most other first person shooter games, mainly for its reliance on realism. Instead of an "arena" where you war against ten or so other people trying to get the most "frags," Spear is about tactics -- using the right weapons for the right missions, coordinating your attack with the men in your squad, and so on. For these reasons, you might consider Rainbow Six and its sequels and spin-offs in a new categoy of shooter: the "Tactical Shooter."
If you've been into games like Unreal Tourney and Q3, you might, at first, be disappointed in Spear. The graphics, while perfectly legit, are not NEARLY as impressive as the other games, both in "effects" and actual textures and such. They don't seem to up themselves much from the original game. Of course, you're not jumping around, spraying bullets everywhere in hopes of hitting someone either. There's no frenzy involved, instead there's something that replaces that wantonness:
That something is intensity.
The genius behind this game lies, unexpectedly, in its realism, because unlike the other FPS's, when you get shot, you die; and when you die, you're dead. There's no health, no spawning, no extra lives for you to come back and seek your revenge with. (English majors will hate me for that sentence, I know it.) Now, one might think that this is "too realistic" -- that with an idea like this, the game would become tedious and boring. I thought so to. And add in the tactical element, I was afraid the game would lose every ounce of enjoyability (once again the English majors cringe.)
But I was wrong, my friends. These things are the game's greatest strengths. They allow the game to me so much more tense, you'll find after two or three times you'll be completely engrossed, and, five hours later, when you realize you've forgotten to go to all your classes for the day, understand just how much fun close range tactical combat really is.
This is the reason the game is a multiplayer jem. Just knowing that at any time some random guy in Podung-ville could be sniping your head from the tops of any of those buildings around you makes your palms sweat and your adrenaline surge. And it's even better when they're your friends. It's all about who can kill who first -- cause once you get yours, they win. From there stem strategies, tactics, and outright balls (should I say guts instead?) Just try the game out if you don't believe me. You can always take it back. But I'm positive you won't be disappointed.
There's plenty of levels and different multiplayer modes, from all-out deathmatches (even though they're not quite that) to team survival modes, this game has enough to keep you coming back for days on end. The first time I played, I made the mistake of starting at midnight. 6 hours later, when it was DAYLIGHT, I found myself having to be torn away to get some sleep before class. Team plays are great fun, too. There's an option to turn on radio chat, so you can actually speak to each other (if you have a mic that is.) It's neat, and it makes things more interesting than mano e mano.
Final Thought: Please buy this game. You'll be doing yourself a favor.
PS - My apologies to all the English majors whom I unintentionally injured during the course of this review. Their families have been compensated.
