techgeek419's Full Review: Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell for PlayStation 2
Gameplay
Strictly a 'strategy' game that requires a great deal of careful timing. Missions often involve getting past bad guys to get to a certain place or perform a certain task - and how long you wait to move forward to a new area is crucial. However, the actual mission strategies are not as detailed and complex for the average gamer (as compared to say James Bond games).
Irritations and Frustrations
Seems the whole game is based on 'creeping' up behind people and knocking them out, or waiting for the guys to move away so you can sneak by..its silly. Definitely not an intense high action game. For those with limited patience it can be frustrating to play.
Limited and untimely check points
You can get 30 minutes into a level, then die because some alarm went off, then you have to start right from the beginning. You have to be careful to follow withing the guidelines of each mission to prevent this.
Cool parts
Different moves (special jumps, swinging down ropes)
Unique items like optical cameras, lock picks, and other cool gadgets to help accomplish missions.
Great realistic graphics.
Well thought out detailed missions.
You get new ammo and health with each level automatically.
Unique Breakthroughs
A game that considers brightness and color as part of the strategy since you have to avoid security cameras and walk in the 'shadows' to secretly by pass enemies
The missions are well thought out, and you feel like you are in some kind of movie. Each level brings something unique, the visuals are awesome. Breakthroughs in video such as fog, smoke, fire, which help create intense realism.
Disappointments
No map or navigation system (can get lost sometimes).
No high action fighting or realistic kills.
No blood and gore (guys just fall when shot)
Aiming can be difficult.
Bad guys are the same place every time and do not show up randomly.
Limited items to pick up (health, ammo, ect) and to get them sometimes it can be a pain.
Cut scenes are short, compared to even other earlier third person games. But better than being too long and unable to skip (like Grand Theft Auto).
