Pros: natural ingredients, no alcohol, fights odor-causing bacteria, sweet apricot scent, lasts a few hours
Cons: not strong enough for all-day protection, don't think it will hold up in the summer
On a recent online shopping trip through Drugstore.com, I added this product to my cart. I hadnt heard of it before and only stumbled upon it when buying some other Toms of Maine dental care products. But it sounded like a good product to try and it supposedly smelled like my favorite fruit. For under $5, I figured I couldnt go wrong.
My 2 oz. plastic spray bottle of Toms of Maine Natural Deodorizing Body Spray in Apricot scent contains no artificial or animal ingredients. It uses zinc citrate (a compound of zinc and citric acid) to naturally combat odor-causing microbes and has a natural apricot fragrance for a fresh scent. I have not seen this product in stores. I purchased mine online at Drugstore.com for about $5. It is also available in lavender and calendula.
Water, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Glycerin, Apricot Fragrance (Natural), Zinc Citrate, Natural Benzoic Acid
Im nursing my son and Ive heard that its not good to use strong scents around newborns so Ive been trying to steer away from fragrances for a while. Im normally not a perfume freak anyhow but I do like to smell fresh. Ive been using a vanilla scented antiperspirant (review to come) for several months and Im happy with its effectiveness. But I thought Id give this natural deodorizer a chance. Worst case scenario, I figured I had a spritzer to layer on top of my antiperspirant.
The scent is yummy. It smells a sweeter than a real apricot and I think I detect a little apple scent mixed in, but its good. Very fruity, very fresh, and a lot more authentic than typical body sprays. Plus, there isnt that layer of alcohol that most body sprays have.
Ive tried using this as my only deodorant and its not too bad now in the wintertime. It doesnt last all day and I did start to stink a little after several hours. I havent tried it in warmer weather but I cant imagine itll hold up as well. So I would not recommend this as a substitute for an all-day deodorant. But it does hold up for a few hours at which point you can respray and get a couple more hours out of it.
Ive still had to use a regular deodorant/antiperspirant on many occasions, but I often layer it with this stuff for double protection or as an added scent to make me feel more girly. Once in a while, I actually get a chance to dress up and spraying a little of this Apricot Body Spray is a nice treat. I think layering it helps my regular deodorant work a lot better and I like this spray as a perfume substitute. Its not strong but has a sweet, natural scent that lingers all day (though it trails off after a few hours) and is safe enough to spray all over my body. I generally just spritz under my arms, but a couple of times I sprayed it on my wrists and neck. The scent didnt bother my allergies.
If youre expecting 24-hour protection from this, steer clear. But if youre looking for a sweet-scented natural alternative that you can reapply once or twice during the day that will hold up during cooler temperatures (Ive only used it in the fall and winter), then this is great. I love it as a body spray. It smells yummy, lasts several hours, doesnt contain alcohol, and layers nicely with my regular deodorant.
