Pros:Soft smooth feel
Cons:a bit pricey, but what a bod? I mean bottle.
The Bottom Line: This is a cool looking product to have on the top shelf of the bar picking up glancing looks. A fine smooth taste.
My wife and I received rum and other spirits for the Christmas Holidays. It seems that many people know my wife and I like to savor a drink on cold winter nights in front of our fire place. One of the gifts in a gift pack was a 1 liter bottle of Tommy Bahama Golden Sun Rum.
This fashion flunky wasn't sure where he saw that Tommy Bahama name before. My wife quickly reminded me its a brand name we often see in clothes stores in resorts we frequent a couple-a-few times per year. So it seems the Golden Sun Rum company had a marriage with Tommy Bahama and came out with a designer product.
A designer bottle it is! It has a look of an upscale perfume bottle. It's tall and tapered in opposite fashion gaining width from the bottom up. The transparent golden hue of the rum can be seen within the confines of a false bottom and bottom edge that also widens as it ascends. It is a pretty cool looking bottle and I do like the colour of the rum.
This rum is made in the Caribbean island of Barbados that we are told through a tag on the bottle is the most easterly of the Caribbean islands and is therefore an excellent rum making place due to warm temperatures and cool trade winds. The rum is made from Black strap molasses. Now let me tell ya, when I first read those three words I was confused. Perhaps it was my dyslexia or the references to designer fashion but I thought I read Black Strapless something or other and wanted a peek at that. Alas, I read it wrong.
Golden Sun is made in a family owned distillery on Barbados that's been in operation over 80 years through four generations.
The bottle came with a tag telling me what I should taste. It states, Golden Sun Rum has an elegant fruity nose and a taste nuanced with hints of coffee, roasted nuts, and sweet pralines. Now how could I not like that? Truth is I do like it though my taste buds cannot capture the nuances. They gotta give me a stronger hint
I actually do notice a fruity aroma that is quite pleasing. The taste is also subtle but I don't get coffee, nuts and sweet pralines. I do get a slightly sweet taste and a comfortable bite that is easy on the tongue. It's actually very good and I could sip this stuff all night. I can describe it as a gentle feel with a soft subtle touch of sweetness in taste.
My wife made us each a rum and coke with it. I wonder what those in Barbados would say if they found their elegant fruity nosed designer model bottle hangin' with the blue collar, American, Coca Cola can? Would people be talking? I thought the two made a fine couple. It mixed well but because I liked this product straight out of the bottle (neat), I won't waste it in mixed drinks again. That said, I will still stick with my favorite Rum from Jamaica, Myers. They both seem like priced, a bit more than most other basic rums.
